Well Hag, why don't you put down that glass of chilled rose remember the "good old days" where houses like DDD and Pi Phi would keep inviting back huge numbers of girls each round (including pref) who they had NO INTENTION of ever extending a bid, just so it seemed they were being more exclusive. Those girls would then get cut on bid day, which was incredibly brutal. Those same girls could have been cut earlier and spent time getting to know houses that they (the PNM) cut earlier because they felt they had a real chance at DDD/Pi Phi/Chi O/Zeta, etc. My mom and my aunt (who are both alumna of one of the "top" houses) told me about how brutal it was, and how their house would have separate lists with the girls they actually wanted, and the "party filler" girls. That sort of thing made the whole system more elitist and much more cruel (though obviously, you seem to think that was a better way of doing things). The problem now, I think, is these girls who are so self-absorbed that they can't get over social influencing, etc. The new system (well, not so new anymore) allows more options for girls to get involved in Greek life. If a girl is so obsessed with just one or two houses (i.e., KKG Chi) that she feels life is over if she does not receive a bid, that young lady has many more problems than sorority recruitment.
