@eye roll: Actually, my high school does not have class ranks nor a valedictorian because it is deemed unnecessary and divisive. The grades and accomplishments that the students earn speak for themselves to college admissions and the wider community. If a student has a 4.0 and outstanding accomplishments, or if they are kind, hard working and generous and earned the respect of their faculty and peers, any label someone would give them is superfluous and irrelevant. Kids from my school get into Ivy Leagues, large schools, small schools, and all branches of the US military academies without being ranked or bestowed with a "prize." No, ranks don't and shouldn't apply to everything. Enlightened people understand this, insecure people with their heads up their asses don't.
