Groups that have historically high retention rates, are required by Panhellenic to cut so many girls so that they have a chance to filter down to the groups who have lower retention rates. You would much rather be cut now so you can focus on other groups than strung along and cut groups that were really interested in having you as a member. It is easy to cut the first round by GPA and lack of recs.
