Recently I have been asked by many GDI's and freshmen what the difference is between an Independent Fraternity, and an IFC Fraternity. I usually give them a brief summary that kind of answers their question just to make them happy. I want to delve deeper however into the differences between the two types, and hear other opinions. Two main differences, are that Independent fraternities can not participate in Greek intramuralso, or Greek Week. However, that being said, Independent Fraternities may still compete in standard intramurals against non-Greeks. Now that we've looked at the drawbacks of not being IFC, let's look at the benefits. Independent Fraternities generally have lower dues, and fewer regulations. To answer the common question of which one you should join, the answer is that it is completely up to you, and what your looking for. Picking your fraternity is like picking a family, it is one of the most personal choices you can make. In my experience, IFC fraternities are generally closer to the very original fraternities ever formed, in that they are focused on creating men of scholar. On the other hand, independent fraternities are the "fun" fraternities. They're the ones that the movies are made out of.
