For fraternities that's not a huge factor. Sororities tend to be way more age discriminatory. Unless you're an exceptional specimen of a sophomore rushee, you'll find that you will likely be dropped by most top houses on the first day. Knowing a lot of people in the house will help you in a really big way, because there are exceptions. But since I'm guessing you're know what house you want to get into anyway, you should have started marketing yourself to them long ago. Even though you may "know" what house you want, be open and stick through with the whole week, you could end up somewhere awesome that you never expected.
