Hazing

Poster Message:
Most sororities at UD don't haze anyway, but that being said: Hazing at a structured level is the only way people in a Greek organization are going to form a bond that a true brotherhood/sisterhood is known for over a period of only a few weeks. How can I join a group of dozens of girls (or a dozen guys, take your pick) and get initiated with no real knowledge of that person or no mutual experience to build off of? If I don't even know everyone in my pledge classes name (unfortunately the case for many sorority girls) can I really call them my "sister" or "brother"? Hazing in a responsible manner is built for a purpose. It is there to force a group of people who didn't know each other to unite against common obstacles and strive towards a common goal. This forges an actual bond. Realize that most universities define ANY compulsory activity that pledges must do together as hazing. The lack of "hazing" in many Panhel organizations is why sorority sisters can walk by each other on the street and not even acknowledge each other. There is a reason Greek organizations totally run by have college students have stayed thriving in many cases for over 100-150 years - the strong bond between members. Without that bond, you are in a social club, and a weak one. A strong pledge ship is a strong organization.
