If you know alums then yes! It can only help you. It is pretty uncommon for chapters to get letters of rec, but it does happen. What they probably meant by "absolutely not" needing them was you shouldn't go out stressing about getting one for every chapter. But if you know/are related to some sorority alums who would give you a glowing recommendation, go for it!!
