new panhellenic rules

by:

I understand why Panhellenic made it against the rules for us to attend spring fraternity parties but I don't get why the rule had to be so strict. Why can't we stay with girls for Detby Day but not go to the party? Why does another post say we can't even talk to sorority girls if we come watch the dances? Can some one politely explain what contact is allowed and what isn't.

I don't know the exact answer but these are my ideas. They don't want you to stay with girls but then not go to the party because what are you supposed to do during that time? If in the dorm you'd have to stay in the room and the girl is supposed to escort you everywhere so that makes things worse. And you can say hello and the basics to a friend from high school but shouldn't be walked up to by random sorority girls that seems like an interview. It's trying to prevent recruitment infractions. Stupid? Yes. But just why I believe that's happening.

You can for sure talk to girls at derby days. It's not a sorority sponsored event so rules don't apply there. Plenty of PNMs were at charity bowl and I talked to lots of them and they came sat with us and other sororities. PNMs just can't wear any sorority gear and they shouldn't cheer for a specific sorority during derby days but you can for sure talk to actives and I know LOTS of pnms will be there.

Why would a PNM ever wear sorority gear? I wore my sister's sorority sticker on game days when I was a freshman/sophomore in high school but not after that. It's just not right at that point.

They have all of these rules to protect the PNMs and the sororities. If the sororities break the rules they get hit with fines. On top of that, Panhellenic wants to prevent dirty rush and by staying with a specific sorority and going to their events is in a way dirty rush. I don't know all of the reasons for the rules but I do know a major one is not for PNMs to go to frat parties.

There is a pi phi that wore Phi Mu letters last year at GHS (close to madison) and a teacher, an alumni if phi mu mu, saw it. She explained that the girl had not earned those letters and it was not good to be seen warring Greek letters while still
In HS. The girl continued to wear the phi mu letters. I heard pictures were sent to phi mu and this girl was cut immediately. Also, if memory serves me, this girl stayed with phi mu at some spring parties. She wore pink and never spoke to other groups. This is a lesson in what is appropriate and not. Until those letters are yours, you don't identify with anyone of them. PNM, you are still in HS. Know your place! These rules are here to protect you!

Please know that I am in a car and I am msking typos. I re-read what I typed. Sorry for the mistakes! I want the PNMs to realize why things are done the way they are done.

Most sororities agree on this. If you haven't been given a bid then you should not wear their letters. Doing so could hurt you in rush because if you go around always wearing one sorority's colors or letter, and they cut you, what are you going to do? Other houses may have noticed you doing so and next thing you know, you are cut from rush. The actives want to talk to you but they don't want to break any of their rush rules so that they don't get fined and will take note if you break rules.

All sororities agree with this. Wearing sorority letters is only allowed for members. Some sororities don't even allow new members to wear "letters" until they are initiated.

I'm not sure about the sororities at State but my friend is an AOPi at Tennessee. They could only wear the name written out until they are initiated. After that they are allowed to wear the Greek letters. My Kappa Sig friends here weren't suppose to wear their letters until initiated either.
