having connections

by:

So basically from some of the posts I've seen on here I can basically just forget being in a top house since I'm out of state and therefore have no connections? Is there any way possible that this isn't true? I have a 4.2 GPA and am very involved at my school in TN. I'm a cheerleader, I'm in several academic honors societies, I'm in community service organizations, etc. Would this be enough even without connections?

Your strong GPA and involvement will get you noticed. It is possible to join a "top" house without having any connections especially if you have good recommendations from hometown alumni. A sorority cannot simply take legacies or members friends. They want to take the best of all girls going through recruitment. Enjoy the process and be yourself!

I agree with the girl above. You will be at a slight disadvantage because you don't have connections, but it is still possible for anyone to get into any house if you fit in! Your strong GPA and involvement make you sound like a great PNM. I'm sure you won't have a problem, but there are lots of things that go into a sorority's decision on whether to keep you or drop you, so you just never know what's gonna happen, connections or no connections. There are lots of great girls who come through with perfect GPAs and looks and involvement and recs and personalities that don't know a soul, and you better believe that top houses aren't gonna pass up those amazing girls. But, like I said, you will be at a slight disadvantage because so many girls go through recruitment and most actives already know a handful of girls that they are 100% sure they want. But girls with no connections get into top houses every single year, you just have to fit in with the house. Sometimes a few great PNMs with no connections slip through the cracks. It happens occasionally, but don't worry about it. Everyone ends up where they're meant to be, and it all works out in the end.

My advice to you is to not worry that you will be dropped by certain houses. If you are meant to be in one of those houses, then you will be! Just be as prepared as you possibly can be for rush and go into it having confidence and an open mind, and just have fun and go with your heart.
