lxa watermelon fest
by: Halp. Can someone clear this up, I'm very confused. How did KD end up winning (not trying to take anything away from that, congrats!) Watermelon Fest when Phi Mu won Volleyball, DG won Field Games, cans, and the RT contest, and XO won Queen? I missed the point break down so I'm confused.

The ONLY points that really matter at Watermelon Fest are the points given for donated canned goods. The sorority that requires their members to donate the most cans always wins ... period because you get a certain number of points for each pound of food donated (most canned goods are right at 1 lb). Don't get me wrong, donating the food is wonderful and Lambda Chi does great philanthropic work but I've never understood why they have any events because they simply don't matter. The winning group is basically buying the win by requiring members to "donate" a certain number of canned goods. I say "buying" the win because I guarantee they don't go door to door collecting the cans. They are bought by individual members. For this reason some people don't consider Watermelon Fest a true competition and why some groups participate but don't go out if their way for canned goods.

Missed the part about DG winning cans. I saw a tweet earlier saying 3 groups were very close in can donations. I guess KD came in 2nd in several events that combined to give them the overall win. As I said, IMO Watermelon Fest is not a true competition because of how the points are done.

A higher number donated doesn't at all mean it's done with less "philanthropic spirit." This seems like an extremely petty thing to be negative about. In my chapter, and I'm sure in the other 2 that you listed as well, we're ENCOURAGED to bring roughly X amount of cans but no one sits there and counts the exact number then signs off on you. You just drop them off and sign by your name that you did it. A large number of us also go home and collect from our parents and other friends and family in addition to or instead of buying. Also a lot of girls get 50 cent cans or use coupons, so you don't actually spend $100. If girls are spending that it's because they can and want to. No one is forcing it. It's a cheap shot to call out 3 groups for donating more just because you think it's excessive or any less philanthropic.

The spread does count cans I think are 100 points, queen 80, then I think it's either volleyball or games that count and finally watermelon decoration. Then 2nd and 3rd place receive prespective points in those events. And although the cans are the most important thing because that's what actually helps people. It is possible to win without the cans it is just harder. We love you all and thank you for helping us raise 107,000. I personally want to thank the KD's and DG's for there continued rivalry and phi Mu for there new interest if there was a sorority that wanted it the most and had the most spirt it was phi Mu. We hope that they serve as an example of how watermelonfest goes (cough cough Chi o) because if we work hard for limelight the least you could do would strive to not be the least involved can wise especially and other and cheer if you win something). Thank you again

With the above said. It seems the best way to ensure a win is to have the entire chapter but a ridiculous amount of cans. Looks good for LXA for that amount of cans donated, but the focus should be on the different games and their own members get the donations. Just my two cents. But congrats to every house who placed in things!
