top msu honors over past 6 years

by:

There has been a lot of discussion over which if any sorority at MSU has been a longterm dominant sorority. My knowledge of MSU sororities began in the fall of 2008 when my sister was a freshman and continues as I am about to enter my senior year. In my opinion most Greeks would agree that there are 8 major elections/competitions each year - SA Officers, Homecoming Queen, Miss MSU (nominees are selected through an interview process and activities. The top 3 or 4 are voted on by the student body), Miss Mississippi State University (preliminary to the Miss Mississippi Pageant), Miss Maroon &White (Most Beautiful), Kappa Sigma Charity Bowl, Sigma Chi Derby Days, and Chi Omega Limelight (Yes, there are other competitions but these last 3 are the most talked about and the largest). The following is a breakdown of the past 6 years:

2008/09
SA Secretary - DG
Homecoming Queen - Phi Mu
Miss MSU - DG
Miss Mississippi State University - Chi O
Miss Maroon & White - Phi Mu
Charity Bowl - Chi O
Derby Days - sororities did not participate as a protest for change in the how the competition was conducted

2009/2010
SA Secretary - Chi O
Homecoming Queen - DG
Miss MSU - independent
Miss Mississippi State University - DG
Miss Maroon & White - KD
Charity Bowl - not held due to Kappa Sig being on probation
Derby Days - KD

Chi O: 15 (2013-2014 really helped push Chi O up and block out KD and DG)
DG: 10
KD: 8
Phi Mu: 8
Independents: 4
DDD: 1
Zeta: 1

So there are a total of 47 possible times to have placed/win/etc over the last 6 years (doesn't include Derby Days or Charity Bowl for years it wasn't held).
Percentage of wins:
Chi O: 32%
DG: 21%
KD: 17%
Phi Mu: 17%
Independents: 9%
DDD:2%
Zeta: 2%

Of course there are other factors like GPAs, retention, and other campus involvements/leadership (Roadrunners, Alumni Delegates, Maroon VIP, Cabinet members, Senators, Freshmen Forum + Council, Spirit Group members, etc) but generally who is placing in what is a good indicator of how everything else is going too.

It is/was not possible for Chi O to win its own Limelight competition - that's 4 competitions in which they didn't even compete. When you consider only the competitions that all groups participated in Chi O's percentage of wins would rise.

Pi Phi colonized in 2009 and ADPi colonized in 2013. It takes a long time to establish a chapter, especially in a highly competative greek system like Mississippi State. Both groups are doing a great job and are involved on campus.

The percentages after the 2014/15 are as follows:

Chi O 29%
DG 20%
KD 18%
Phi Mu 18%
Tri Delt 3%
Zeta 2%

I'd love to see Watermelon Fest winners and Greek Award winners added!

By: Interesting!
by: My guess

is that Watermelon Fest was not included because the winner of it goes to the sorority who donates the most can goods (due to the point system). Any sorority can require members to "donate" canned goods. The things listed are either voted on by the student body or have some element of outside judging. Every sorority wins Greek Awards. They stopped giving out a "top sorority" award around 2009 or 2010.

Would also add miss msu top 4 and homecoming court minus dg since they didn't participate in Greek unity.

Top 3 Miss MSU is a good thing because it's all resume based, and do we seriously have to drag in greek unity voting again? I'm sick of hearing about it. I too think Watermelon Fest should be included because cans are only part of it and games and Queen count too. I can't even remember who won outside of 2 years ago.

I know two of the final girls this year for Miss MSU were the Chi O and a Phi Mu. Don't remember the others.

As for Watermelon Fest, the can collection usually does determine the winer. In 2013 after Day 1 competitons Chi O was in 1st place with 130 pts (1st in volleyball and 1st in watermelon decoration), ZTA was in 2nd with 100 pts (Queen), KD and Tri Delt were tied for 3rd with 60 pts (KD 2nd volleyball. Tri Delt 3rd in volleyball and 2nd in watermelon decoration). Phi Mu was in 4th with 20 pts (4th place volleyball). Pi Phi in 5th with 10 pts (3rd watermelon decoration) and DG and ADPi had 0 points. After day 2 KD was 1st overall with 361 pts after collecting 29,763 lbs of food, DG was 2nd with 241 pts after collecting 24,382 lbs of food, and Phi Mu was 3rd with 156 pts after collecting 4,909 lbs of food ... can collection wins Watermelon Fest. It is totally different from the other things listed above. (Thanks to the Lambda Chi twitter account for the info).

That there have been 4 houses consistently leading the campus for years. Speaking badly of any of those 4 is just unnecessary because they are consistently winners and leaders, with fluctuations every year. It is encouraging to see other chapters placing and getting recognition more recently, but this doesn't take away from any other sorority or bring them down, just boosts all of them.

by: True but...

with more chapters being established on our campus over the past few years and with a new chapter coming soon there is no telling how things will play out. The gap is closing and quality girls are in all of the houses. In general women who choose sorority life are top of the top and will bring a lot to the table no matter what house they are in. The saying winning isn't everything comes to mind. You can win a lot of things, but if you have no respect that speaks volumes. In saying that what I mean is you represent your sorority to others out there and how you leave an impression on them will last longer that any competition you win. The general student body won't remember year after year what you won, but they will remember how you acted.

All of the sororities at MSU deserve respect. They each raise a tremendous amount of money for their respective philanthropies, give many hours of community service in the Starkville/MSU community, promote/support MSU in everything they do and serve as representatives of the Greek letters they wear. An overwhelming majority of all sorority members at MSU do all of these things. Some groups are more competitive than others, some groups are more confident than others, some groups are more vocal than others but none of these should cause a group to not be respected by the student body, faculty, and administration at MSU. The good of each group FAR outweighs the negative.
