Frat trends.

by:

I’ve noticed, over the past 5 years, that whit fraternities are not drawing in the strong stereotypical straight guy. These guys are not interested in pledging a frat where they are hazed and treated poorly. The boys pledging in the “top” frats seem frail, mediocre, beat-down, and unadventurous. I wish we could get back to the day of being a fraternity was fun. The numbers would go up, IMO.

Hazing was not a thing when fraternities were first founded. They asked men they liked to join and they were treated like the friends and brothers they were meant to be. They got a bid and made their pledge and were initiated. Hazing started after so many very young men went to fight in WW2 out of high school instead of going to college, and only came to college after serving. Their impressionable selves knew basic training, and being prepared to survive in wartime. So when these guys joined fraternities, they incorporated some hazing to toughen up their pledges because that's what they knew that you do with 'new recruits', and they extended the pledge period as well and turned it into a boot camp. And their are always guys who are a bit sadistic and added their own particular nastiness to the process. The bad stuff ramped up and up and up over the years and continues because of the 'I had to do it so why shouldn't they' attitude. Now it's to the point where it's just beyond. Why would you debase, torture, and sometimes even kill guys you asked to be your friend? Yes, back to what the founder intended.
