MSU Pan sets chapter total. If they (particular house ) are not giving out bids right now , it’s because that house is at total and can not give out bids. If the house is giving out bids , it means they are NOT at total and can give out bids.

The Chapter Total is the same for all houses, but that number goes up or down from semester to semester. It is reset by panhellenic at the beginning of each semester depending on the actual membership numbers of the houses, which are always changing. In all houses, people drop out or go inactive, people graduate in December as well as in May, people do study abroad or internships, chapters sometimes don't make quota and don't catch up, recruitment numbers across the board trend upwards and then back down, and the total number of chapters can change like it has this semester. So considerations taken when calculating Chapter Total include the largest chapter size and the smallest chapter size and the difference between them, the average chapter size, and the median chapter size. Chapter Total encourages maximum membership numbers and chances for pnm's while maintaining fairness and a level playing field amongst the chapters. So there is no set number, it's always in flux depending on what's going on across the board. Please remember that Chapter Total is set in the fall AFTER recruitment, not before, and in no way influences Quota. A larger number of pnm's = a larger number of bids etc. Only after recruitment is Chapter Total is set. So there is NEVER a set number of spots at the beginning of recruitment.

What's the number?

Last spring, the memberships ranged between 250 - 300. The number of new members taken last spring was in the single digits for each house. That is one snapshot of one semester in a certain year. As stated above, membership numbers change from semester to semester for a wide variety of reasons. This fall a new sorority came on so numbers are different. No house will take someone just to fill up the roster. If they don't want someone they won't offer a bid. If you are a PNM, none of this affects you in any way whatsoever and there's nothing you can do about it. Worry about yourself. Your best chance for a bid is in the fall.
