Clarification needed

by: Anonymous

i just have to know, what makes a “top house” a top house & what makes a bottom tier house “bottom tier”?? Are there really any differences in the quality of girls in each house & if so, at what house do you see the quality of girls begin to drop? Are the “bottom tier” houses considered bad sororities? I just need clarification.

The biggest difference at MSU is involvement. The “top 3” are involved in the most organizations and are known for “running” SGA, FB, and OL. MSU has a history of mainly ranking based on GPA and involvement, along with where the most instate girls go. Looks and kindness don’t matter as much here. Every house has tons of involved girls, these houses are probably just the most vocal about it. There is no real difference in top, mid, or bottom. We have a pretty nontoxic greek environment, but this website makes it seem terrible bc no one sees who said what.

The “bottom” houses haven’t been around yet to develop stereotypes yet, and that’s usually what brings a house up. KD, Chi O, DG, Phi Mu, ZTA, and DDD all take certain types of girls, with some overlap. ADPi and Pi Phi both take super sweet girls, but they don’t necessarily have a set look, involvement, or hometown yet. They get the girls that maybe don’t fit into the other 6. Definitely not bad houses and both had good years, just not as set as the older houses yet.

The things used to TRADITIONALLY judge a top girls are grades, test scores, resume, leadership, and hometown/connection to actives and alums. Those can be subjective and absolutely does not mean all the girls in “top houses” are amazing and that the girls in other houses are less than. Top houses tend to have higher percentages of girls that excel in those areas and put a big emphasis on campus leadership, grades, being competitive in events/elections (like senators and SA exec, and to an extent Miss MSU and Hoco). History of the chapter and how long they’ve been on campus is also a huge factor in top houses, and on the flip side the “bottom” groups are always the newest chapters. It means “top” groups have been leading organizations on campus for decades and have a ton of chapter legacies to pick from. Their alums are typically still in state or in the south and are very active and donate a ton. This doesn’t at all mean the traditional non top houses don’t have these things. It’s again about to what extent they do. Top houses tend to have more so their reputation has been long established and it takes something huge to undo decades of reputation. Other chapters work just as hard, get just as many outstanding members, and have just as much sisterhood, just without the long standing name. Honestly it’s a pro and a con because there are TONS of things the other houses are better at than the top houses, like diversity (both in members and hometowns) and taking girls for them not who they know. It’s a double edge sword and for the most part the only people that care about the history of sororities are the alums, their legacies, and certain well connected girls from certain towns. Also, the gap between top and bottom use to be much more obvious, like years and years ago. Non top houses typically had lower GPAs, less involvement, and retention issues. But in the past decade far more girls are rushing and all chapters are more selective and the “bottom” groups are so different than they were 10-15 years ago. The gap is so small between all the houses and the whole sorority system is MUCH stronger than it use to be and that’s something to celebrate! So no, the “bottom” groups are absolutely NOT bad AT ALL and their members are just as wonderful and deserving as every other house.

"Top House" means highly sought after by mostly instate girls. XO, KD, DG are made up of 70% or more girls who are from Mississippi. Their mom was a member of one of those sororities and have built relationships since little Sarah was in preK do EVERYTHING they can to get their daughter(s) into one of those three.
Also, girls from those three typically run/influence who campus leaders are. It's an old man's club for women :-)
Not that there is anything wrong with that per se, but that is essentially why so many girls vie for those 3 houses.

As you can see by the Fall GPA by house below, all but two are very close. ADP is the newest and they have done an amazing job building up a house with solid girls who are involved. ZTA had some issues in the past with grade risks and retention rates, but they have really stepped up the past 2 years.

Basically, ALL houses are strong and mostly only MS girls battle it out to get into XO, KD, and DG. All the others are mixed with just as many fantastic girls who didn't have as good of in house pull or years of junior league connections.

XO 3.59
KD 3.46
DG 3.43
DDD 3.39
PM 3.36
PBP 3.32
ADPi 3.16
ZTA 3.10
