Why do we get to only vote for Homecoming King and Queen? A "committee" of adults - not even sure who they are - "interview" and decide who will be the maids and Mr. and Miss MSU. I have asked around and noone seems to know why.

When my older cousin was at State, she said all of the sororities were told to vote for specific girls, so then the homecoming court was always entirely Greek. I’m guessing they started using a committee instead of voting to give independents a chance to be on HoCo Court

Maids, Mr and Miss MSU, and Queen (there wasn't King at the time) were all voted for once upon a time. So firstly, students HATED it because there was soooooooo much campaigning. Honestly sororities mostly hated doing all the campaigning too. So when Greeks started selecting the maids and block voting them in it ensured there was no possible way for an independent to win a vote. So the election committee changed the format so that every position was selected by a interview panel (elected students, professors, University admins) to pick the most qualified people. Now you only vote and campaign for King and Queen and honestly it's waayyyyyyy better.
