out of state pledges (non-al,tn,ms)

by: Nonsouthern mom

When my daughter decided to go to MSU and showed a desire to participate in greek life I was concerned as I know that the "southern" sororities are true to their own. I have read many of these posts about "it" girls - really how do you know if a girl from TX, FL, or the east coast is an "it" girl. Out of state schools grade on different scales for example an "it" girl from Miss who takes basic classes in high school and comes out with a 4.0 is more marketable to a sorority than a girl from a high school whose grades are weighted because she took all AP and honors classes. With that being said I was wondering where I might find out where all the out of state girls landed.
What is the percentage of PC for each sorority for states other than Alabama, Mississippi, & Tennessee? Our experience with Mississippi State rush was great she had an amazing time and meet amazing people at most of the houses and she fell exactly where she wanted. However some of the out of state girls where not as luck.

Mississippi schools also offer weighted AP/ honors classes! Grades/ classes are indicated on transcript. Many factors make an "it" girl.grades,involvement,services,honors,gpa. Class rank..
And references.

Most of the top sororities have certain girls that they have their eyes on. They can't possibly take all the girls that they want. Just think if each girl has someone she wants to be in her sorority you have over 200 or more girls but only 80 something spots. That's where it gets into, "it's all in who you know".They aren't going to take risks in girl they know nothing about. In Mississippi most people seem to know someone who knows someone so character can be vouched for. I have seen some lovely, classy, out of state girls and they will definitely be an asset to their chapters. I believe that if you made it through recruitment and received a bid you are an "it" girl regardless of where you landed. All of the sororities at MSU are top notch.

Hi, mom!
To answer your question in the most informative way possible, I would refer you to what is know in academic circles as the CORE GPA. The core GPA is what determines admissibility to the university in the first place, and only considers the classes ALL students need for admission (English, history, math, science), while dropping the 3 of the 4 semesters of dance team and 1 credit of underwater basket weaving. What the core basically does is put all students on the same academic footing for admission. So, it will convert "cumulative GPAs" to core GPAs, thereby eliminating any excessive fluff and getting a true sense of the student's achievements from a standard starting point.

Universities have found, over the last decade or so, that core GPA is the best way to determine academic success in a university setting, so that is typically the GPA of record for the university - and, thus, the GPA of record for a student participating in sorority recruitment. The office of greek life typically provides a comprehensive list of all GPAs for women signed up for formal recruitment, and that is what sororities use. Otherwise, every PNM coming through would say they have a 4.0...because who would know any different?

Hope this answers part of your question... And, to address the other part - it always helps to have a friend in the chapter who can "pull" for you...but if you're a standout girl (from any state) with a good recommendation from a sorority alum, you're good.
