Every new pledge gets a big sister, so it's just a matter of who she is matched with during the sorority's big/little matching process. Most of the time, the most recent new member class would get first choice on their little sister. So, for this year, the girls who pledged last fall (2012) would be the big sisters. Most of the big sisters this year will be sophomores, because they pledged as freshmen. But, there will be cases where the big sister is a junior or even senior if pledged as a sophomore or junior.

Matching a big with a little is a mutual selection process - much like recruitment itself. Most sororities allow the recently pledged women to list the chapter members they'd most like to have as a big sister and then the big sisters do the same. Then they match everyone up and have a big party to 'reveal' to the little sisters who their big sister is...and the big sister lavishes her with gifts - usually branded items of whatever sorority it is.

It's a fun process!
