rush
by: KimiHow much influence do sorority alumni play in helping choose their sorority’s pledge class? I get that it’s their legacy to help keep the sorority going and successful. But do they actually have a say so in the final bid list?
#1by: Depends
In XO, DG and KD, a fair amount. They aren't picking the final lists by any means, but they definitely have a say in who makes it past the first, maybe second round. After that's it's up to the members and recruitment team. If you're coming from a place with a lot or prominent alums and don't have a rec from them, or have a bad one, you won't make it because there are other girls they did recommend. That's just for MS and Memphis girls though. Alums don't have as much control in the other houses.

I’m a younger alum, and I personally think it’s weird for alumna to have influence on recruitment lists. As much as I love my sorority, it’s no longer “my” chapter. I’m not the one spending time with the new pledge class- the actives are. I trust that they’ll choose girls who they think will fit into the chapter.

Yes they have influence in other houses, too. Phi Mu and phi Phi are always getting negative letters and emails from alum. My roommates are in those sororities and let rush stuff slip out. If the accusations are backed up with photos, an alum can be bad news for some girls. My little sister is rushing next year and my advice to her is to really be nice to moms that are affiliated with a sorority. You never know what they can do for you. And it’s just better to be nice anyway.
