dues
by: StateBound Soon!I will be coming through recruitment this year and have a question that I hope someone can answer for me. I saw the post about new houses and renovations/additions to houses. My question is about the dues. If a sorority is building a new house or making improvements, does that greatly increase the cost of their dues? I would think it does, but I don't know how all that works. Please don't say that if you pledge a sorority you should have enough money that it doesn't matter because I have friends from my high school that pledged last year and they are paying part of their dues. So, I know that's not true. My parents will be paying my dues, but I feel responsible to keep them as reasonable as possible. I've talked to other people that have the same concern so any information you can give me will be most appreciated. Thank you.

Most sororities have housing corporations that pay for the house. It is NOT the chapter/alums that are paying for it. So therefore, dues should not increase unless the chapter decides to raise them to pay for more events.
Sororities come on this campus knowing that they will have to have a house.. so their Headquarters/Nationals know that they will have to provide one.

Referencing the comment above about house corporations and alums paying for the houses...that's just wrong. Where do you think the house corporations get their money? Yes, some alums do donate...but the VAST majority of House Corp funds come directly from fees paid to the sorority by its members.
Currently, Phi Mu has announced that they are building a new house and THEIR OWN MEMBERS are saying that will cause a dues increase for their chapter members. I have no idea if this is accurate, but that is what the collegians are telling people. What is accurate is the fact that they are already the most expensive house on campus.
Chi O may be planning an expansion, but because their house has been on campus so long and their chapter is so long-established, I doubt their members will see much of an increase in their dues because of the money they've got saved.
Embarking on any building project is a HUGE undertaking. And, to do it right, it takes lots of money, time, and effort. We're talking MILLIONS up front (to prevent the chapter from having to pay lots of money in dues) and at least a year or two of planning before anything can actually get started.

Fact: phi mu currently has next to the lowest dues on the row, not highest. Literally 2nd lowest dues.
Fact: chi o is not the only sorority with a savings nor the only ones who have been on campus and a long established group. Remember a current house will be sold to a fraternity. A house that was one of the first at msu.
Looks like once again someone is trying real hard to damage phi mu on this site...Sad.
Make sure your statements are true before you post.
Yes years of planning, national support and the selling of a house help curb $$ issues.
Dues would not be any greater than the other houses. Fact.

Yes, fees come from dues paying members. However, those fees are not obscene amounts to pay for their house. I know in my chapter, we pay a one time housing fee and that is how our sorority pays for houses all over the country. It is not the individual chapter providing money for their house. Well, it's not for my chapter anyways. I would definitely hate for it to be that way.

Not slamming Phi Mu but if their dues are second lowest on the row there is a huge difference between the last two groups. Mothers from the same hometown compare dues and then discuss it with their daughters. Phi Mu's were always significantly higher than the ones I paid and by significant I am saying $800 to $900 more per semester. It is what it is, being in a sorority is expensive. I honestly think no PNM would base her choice of house on the amount of dues!
