improving chances
by: HelpI find myself being released from recruitment, 4.0 GPA, plenty of extracurricular activities including service work, and genuinely loving all the houses. I thought I had good chances of being placed, and I spoke to someone at orientation that said only girls who only go in wanting one specific house don't get placed. Is there anything I could do to prepare for spring recruitment? Is it worth me trying again? What did I do wrong?

You did not do anything wrong so don't think that for a minute! There are girls every year that unfortunately fall thru the cracks, so to speak. A house may have loved you but a girl with tons of connections made the list ahead of you. Actives hope that means you'll find a home somewhere else, but when that happens with every house on your schedule you find yourself released even with everything right on paper. Keep your head up! Did you go to every house that invited you back before you were released? If so you "maximized your options" and are eligible for a snap bid (if any house finds themselves not making quota morning of bid day they can call girls that were not offered a bid and offer them a bid to their house, even if you didn't attend their pref. You go to bid day like everyone else and no one knows you were a snap). OR you'll be eligible for COB, where even after rush a house is still below campus total so they can bring on a few more girls to fill the spots. If neither of those happen you can definitely try for a house in spring rush! Just get involved on campus this semester to bolster your resume and try to meet as many as actives as possible. I sincerely wish you luck!

It sounds like you were a victim of the hypocrisy of rush. I would recommend you find some other great organizations on campus and find you place .... being Greek just isn’t that important at State. You will find your spot and then decide if Greek life is worth the effort

There are more than four sororities here and you need a rec for each house to have your best chance of getting a bid. Having a rec is no guarantee, as you have unfortunately found out, but without recs to the other houses you were an easy cut for all of them. For spring: make good grades this semester, get involved in a campus organization or two to show you can contribute, meet girls at every house through class or dorms or other organizations (this is KEY for spring recruitment), keep your behavior and rep clean (very important), and get those recs.

Hi
Here’s my best advice. Find other things to get involved in on campus. This is ridiculous and I wouldn’t take it personal. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you but there is something wrong with the double standards around here. I wish a lot of girls would find other organizations and step away from the hypocrisy of sororities. Not being Greek will NOT affect your social life here.
Wish you the best and keep your chin up!

I got recs for 4 of the houses. I’m the first in my family to go Greek. I only know a couple of people who went here and they weren’t greek. I thought I had impressive recs. My rec for Tri del was from someone who served on the executive committee. My rec for phi mu was from the assistant to the attorney general for the state of Alabama.
