joining a sorority sophomore year?

I'm curious to know about recruitment as a sophomore. This past year it was rough for me to make close friends with the college transition and moving to MSU. I thought that maybe joining a sorority would help. How important are rec letters? My friends back home in the midwest got into sororities without recs but I know the south is a little different.
If I end up joining a house do you think I could still make close friends even if my PC class is mostly freshman? And how much of sorority life is all about partying?

Hey, people might stress the importance of rec letters.. I had zero and landed a house I'm very happy in. There's parties every week with frats, swaps/date parties, and just normal events, some but few may be required so you can select your party amount. I am not in the same boat as a Sophomore rushing but I know quite a few from my house that did and they fit in so well. Don't stress about it!
