recommendations

by: Hmmm

I am a senior planning to go through rush next year. The whole thought of getting recommendations really stresses me out. I don't think I know an alumni in each sorority. Did anybody get a bid to a sorority that they didn't get a recommendation for? tia

If a sorority wants you bad enough they will find you a rec. See if your mom's friends, co-worker, your teachers, etc were in a sorority. There are only 8 sororitys at MSU, not 15+ like other universities. You should be able to get one for each.

Check with teachers, family friends, and even can reach out directly to alumnae groups. Have a resume, headshot, and any other information they ask for. The house I'm in I had a friend's aunt write. But focus on it more in spring, when you can include senior year accolades and update GPA.

I suggest finding people now. Not necessarily asking them to write the rec but start asking around to see who might be a sorority alum. Make a list of who you can approach in the spring also go ahead and begin putting together your resume for all of high school. If you wait and do it at the last minute it's easy to overlook an award or activity. Starting now will give you time to have everything in order. As was mentioned above don't do the final resume until you know final gpa, all senior honors and any MSU scholarships you receive.

What other types of things do sororities like to have us list on the resume? Clubs, community service (include # of hours)? Thanks
I'm the first in my family to go through recruitment, so I appreciate any help and advice you can give.

Don't include hours unless it's something stand out worthy (average of 20 hours/month at the YMCA) or something like that. Start with everything you do. Then condense down and rank them by what would best represent you AND help you stand out. Resume should be 1 page. Google should have good ideas for templates, too!
