top 4
by: ?Just wondering why there's a constant debate on here about whether or not phi mu is on the same level as KD, chi o, and DG. Some people are either super opinionated that they are or adamant that they arent. They seemed super cool today actually, so I was just wondering why people don't consider them on the same level?
#2by: Honest
Mainly because in the recent past Phi Mu has struggled with retention. If you look at chapter size they are 4th. Grades 4th and It's been consistently that way for years. Also in my 3 years here they haven't had a member receive a big honor such as HOCO Queen or Miss MSU and I don't remember a HOCO maid either. The other three you mentioned have all won these honors and had multiple maids each year.. I'm not trying to be negative but honestly answering your question. They appear to have a strong sisterhood. Phi Mu is involved on campus and are always strong in volunteer work.
#3by: agree...
Agree with above. They have had an issue with retention and are 4th in size. They also are not considered a "Mississippi Girl" sorority like ChiO, KD and DG. Also, they are generally not considered to have an exceptionally close sisterhood and many would say they have a "mean girl" reputation on campus. So....opinion is varied. Some people will include them at the bottom of top tier. They do have some pretty girls and are involved on campus. But, many group them closer to ZTA and PiPhi - both have had strong pledge classes the last couple of years and have won some events. Both ZTA and PiPhi are generally considered more likable also. I'm not a Phi Mu, ZTA or PiPhi - so this is just my observation from what I see and hear on campus.
#4by: Please
Traditionally, Phi Mu has always been a top sorority here. They win senate seats, are active in student government, have pageant winners, have had homecoming court members, and have won many campus competitions for many years. Please look st past posts and the data will support this.
Anyway, why does it matter? If I loved a sorority and felt at home there, I'd stay and join. I have many friends in phi Mu and their sisterhood is incredible. I love my sorority as well and I am happy there. I don't think it's cool when others who don't know the inside of a group make generalizations with no merit. I'm a DG and my roommate is a phi Mu. I love them and they love us.
#5by: Maybe...
Someone with a close friend/roommate in Phi Mu may see things differently. But I agree with posts #2 and #3. The general feeling is that Phi Mu pushes their inclusion in a Big 4 or Top 4, when they're just as close to PiPhi and Zeta as they are KD, ChiO and DG. They have had Honors and involvement in the past, but PiPhi and Zeta have also been successful lately. But, you're right, it doesn't matter...go where you feel at home! Be happy to be in any of our chapters!
#7by: Not even a little
Phi Mu has never traditionally been a top 4 house. Up until Pi Phi and ADPi came to campus (so 2009 & 2012) there were only 6 sororities on campus - DG, KD, Chi O, Zeta, DDD, and Phi Mu. So no, 4 of them were not considered the top 4 while 2 were not. The whole debate about Phi Mu didn't exist until 5-6 years ago when these other sororities got here. This isn't an insult to Phi Mu and doesn't mean they aren't an amazing chapter, just like every chapter here. But to say Phi Mu has been one of the best and there has always been a top 4 is just false.

Yes they have won Limelight a few times but not all sororities compete in it. Chi O can't because they sponsor Limelight so it always scews the overall "winner" count. They have been strong at Charity Bowl the past few years. As far as Srenate goes, they run huge numbers of members with only 50% winning. KD, Chi O and DG might not have as many members running for senate but they usually have a 100% winning rate. That says a ton to me.
