Unless SA continues to push for the most qualified this is what will happen:
Mr. MSU will be a Sigma Chi
Ms. MSU will be a Chi O
Maids will be Chi O, KD, DG

It's really sad but those are the houses that have a monopoly on those titles. This year the court was the most diverse in years but it was still filled with a majority KD and Chi O. 2 maids were KD, 2 were Chi O, 1 DG, 1 Zeta, and 2 independent. Chi O, KD, and DG have a monopoly on SA and will likely push for their sisters first. I personally know most of the girls on homecoming court from last year and the 2 independents were both departmental scholars and one was a Truman scholar so they got in on resume. The Zeta got in because I believe she's a departmental scholar and a pageant girl. Those 3 didn't have the right connections but were able to get in on merit so hopefully we will see changes happening.

Maids are selected via interviews. All selected are very involved on campus and deserved the honor of representing the student body. The nominees on the ballot for Mr MSU and Miss MSU are selected based on campus involvement and honors. Last year's winners and the other nominees were all outstanding and gave much of themselves to MSU during their years here. SA has worked hard over the past few years to have these elections better represent the entire student body and for the elections to be on a more level playing field. As long as KD, Chi O, and DG remain the most involved sororities the chance of them having representatives is very likely. Believe me, the current system is MUCH better than the HOCO election system in place my freshman year.

A level playing field would allow any student that would like to the opportunity to participate in an election. These are now selections rather than elections. There is a lot of life experience to be gained from participating in a campaign, win or lose. Who is in charge that thinks the student body cannot properly decide who they would like to have represent their classes and school? "Spirit of State" is a selection process that recognizes students for academic achievement and dedication to MSU. It just seems that this is a form of social engineering and I'm not in favor.

@Really?

My older sister was here from '08-'12. She says HOCO elections were a free for all with every sorority nominating girls for each maid and Queen. So you had a total of 30 girls running (only 7 sororities at the time). DG had outside speakers come in to teach them how to campaign. They had HOCO queen and a maid for each class for almost 4 straight years. Of course the other sororities were frustrated so in The next phase the other sororities got together to basically block vote their candidates. All of the sororities except DG nominated 2 maids for each class and 1 queen. The maids and Queen nominees were rotated through the sororities so every sorority had at least one person nominated for maid. DG continued to nominate their own people. Talk about lack of Greek unity. This process continued for 2 or 3 years until the current system was but in place for 2015 HOCO elections. it may seem flawed but there is a very good reason it's that way. From my sister's observation it's much better now.
