where you get in depends on hometown

by:

I don't care what anyone says about rush. This is the truth: girls from established hometowns who know girls already in the sorority get bids from the "top houses." The "bottom tier" houses are made up of small town and out of state girls and a few rejects from cities. Especially with the new quota. It has very little to do with "quality" despite what everyone says. That's the reason the lower houses have a few more bad seeds because there were no members who knew them beforehand. The majority of all sororities are made up of girls with equal GPA and high school involvement. I already know there will be negative comments so bring them on but it's the truth. If you deny it you are an idiot.

I don't disagree. To get KD, Chi O, or DG, you have to know several people in the chapter. Even if you're not so great but you have some friends in one of them, you'll probably get in unless you are a serious grade risk. They also have LOTS of legacies - half the pledge class is probably a legacy.

By: Dawg
by: Hmmm

Wrong on the legacy part for sure. Yeah they have tons of legacies but are very selective. Each of the groups you listed took around 25 legacies, so not even one third of new members were legacies. Many friends were cut from these groups too.

Seriously DG has become irrelevant. Random girls, not many girls in leadership roles, looks are questionable, don't win competitions. Go ahead and tell yourself that DG contends for top girls. The only people who believe this are DGs themselves. That's all.

You keep trying to push that so hard lol sorry but DG isn't going anywhere anytime soon!! If they were " so irrelevant" you wouldn't feel the need to comment on them on every single post lol. So irrelevant they placed in almost every major competition this year, and last year, top 3 in campus involvement, top 3 in grades, sweethearts in multiple fraternities, constantly have swaps and mega swaps with KD and chi o and top fraternities, top 3 in return rates during rush and had to make the 2nd largest amount of cuts next to chi omega, also top 3 in membership numbers. Cute try though, you wish they were irrelevant so bad.

Why are trying so hard to defend them? It's ok if they aren't no. 1. They are a good group; they are just more fandom than the other top three. They still are good. Just accept your place.

100 percent accurate. It is all about where you are from no diversity and legacies are irrelevant if Mom and Dad aren't still
In the right town.

Let's test this theory. Is there any way to list last year's pledge classes and each member's hometown? Or is that posted somewhere? No names...just hometowns. As a PNM, wondering if I should even bother with going through rush since I'm from an out of state city (even though it is a large, southern, SEC school city)

I'm from a big out of state city and I would recommend going through recruitment! Some chapters it really does matter where you're from and who you know, but others only care about who you are.

I'm OOS and from the Midwest and 100% recommend recruitment. Yes, you will not have a "perfect rush." But that's not what really matters. Sororities are the best way to make "instant friends" on campus - which can be hard to do at first as an OOS student. No matter what sorority you get into, you WILL make friends. The sorority house itself will also serve as a "home away from home" when your home may be many, many hours away.

I would love to join a sorority at MSU, but it doesn't look like there are much of us from the mid-west (IL). Do you think that is because most don't go thru rush or because they were cut?

There are very few people from the Midwest at State in general. So that is reflected in the small number of midwesterners in sororities currently. Mississippi State is only about 24% OOS, with the majority of those people coming from Tennessee and Alabama.

So I really wouldn't worry about it too much! Your grades are probably the most important thing to getting into a house. A very large majority of girls who go through recruitment get a bid. Also, all the sororities at State are top-notch. I honestly believe any of our sororities would be considered "top" at a lot of midwestern schools because of our heavy alumni investment and how well they are all run.

I'm from way wayyyyy out of state. 4.0 GPA, heavily involved in sports and volunteer work, rec letters, and I got cut from everything but one house the first day. I was friendly and felt like I clicked well with all chapters and clearly had the GPA and involvement I just wasn't southern enough for some of the chapters. You can do everything right and still have a bad rush. And yes, this was before variable quota. I probably would've had a better rush had variable quota been in place tbh.

I am from a Midwest state and am currently in a sorority at MSU. I absolutely love where I am and wouldn't change a thing!! Honestly, I like the diversity of the girls in my sorority instead of the ones that only take girls from certain towns/high schools. One of the main reasons I went out of state was to get out and meet new people and not find myself stuck to the hips of girls from my high school. What fun is it to go to school and not meet new people?

There is a 90% if your mom is not an alum of a house at State where she still has connections you will only get invited to pref night by Pi Phi, Zeta or ADPi.... maybe Tri Delta.

And only then with a killer resume. If you know no one ... ADPi period. Hate it because it is a southern thing.

Please don't be discouraged! I'm from TN and knew literally no one from MS and preffed 2 top houses. Sometimes they love you for you and it's not always about where you're from. And no, I wasn't a legacy for either. But in the end it doesn't matter where you end up as long as you love it. Best of luck! Just be yourself!

I don't know if all of those numbers are accurate. I am in one of the top 3 houses and was OOS and knew no one. If you have the grades, recs, resume, and click with a house you totally can get in. Every house takes girls they never heard of until they walked thru the door on Day 1 of rush. Some take less, so it's just more competitive for those spots, but being OOS is NOT a huge detriment IF you have everything else in order.

By: Not necessarily!
by: lol

Did it ever occur to you that you're not the norm? That girls even better on paper and maybe even in person than you didn't come out on top? Because it happens, a lot.

Sorry, but I'm not so sure I believe you.

That's the post the top tier moms make to keep the facade up that anybody has a chance at the top houses. You will see nearly the exact same post made on these discussions at other greekrank pages.

And if you did have that legitimate experience at rush, you are the exception to the rule.

All depends on if enough girls pull for you in the sorority and if the moms , grandmothers and advisors approve- which is rare. It is all about who you know. The only time gpa matters is initially when they make releases based on grades which is typically day 1. The reason why ZTA, ADPi, Pi Phi, DDD and Phi Mu are becoming stronger is because out of state girls typically end of there. These girls have just as strong if not better resumes than the MS girls. Just how it is. Occasionally a few girls will slip through the cracks, though.
