involvement not sorority related

by:

This doesn't have to do with Greek life really but does anyone have any tips on how to get involved on campus? I keep signing up for things and am having a very hard time actually gettting into anything. Everyone always says go get involved on campus it's so fun and you make so many friends!!! But actually doing it is harder than it seems! Which is frustrating

I agree. Go to the Dean of Students office. Tell them just what you said. They need to hear it from a student experiencing this. There is a lot of Greek nepotism. The very ones that preach diversity are also looking out for their own sorority/fraternity friends and handing them the positions you want to have a chance in.

Have you looked at the list of student organizations on State's website? They are listed under Colvard Student Union. Yes getting a spot in some organizations is incredibly hard but others don't require an interview process and are open to anyone like S.E.R.V.I.C.E. DAWGS and a new group Feed the Hunger. Every major or department has clubs or organizations you can become a part of too. There are political organizations, religious organizations, and recreational groups that are open to all.

It's normal to have 250-300 or more people interview for a small number of spots (20-30) in the most desired organizations like Roadrunners, Fashion Board, and freshman organizations, etc. The process can be frustrating and dent your self-esteem for sure! I suggest trying departmental groups and service organizations working with the Starkville community.

Sure you can go talk to the Dean of Students as Pink suggests. I don't see neopotism instead I see huge numbers of smart, high achieving, outgoing leaders interviewing for a limited number of spots. It's reality.

Yes, it's true there are few spots for many talented applicants, but take a close look at each of these organizations. You very quickly can connect the dots between current members and those selected. Anyone who wants to ignore the nepotism claim has probably benefitted from it.

So what solution would you propose? Please don't say each house should be represented "equally". I'm a fairly liberal person and love the idea of everyone being equal but realistically life Doesn't work that way. Every person chosen for OL, Roadrunner, AD, etc. goes through the same process. Another truth is Road Runners have an "in" to becoming OLs since they already work with the admissions/orientation employees as a Roadrunner. I interviewed a couple of years and was not picked but I used the interview process as an experience to meet more people and grow.

Don't think this thread said all houses would be represented equally. It just said look at each organization and it's seems interesting how friends seem to be passing the torch on to friends. C'mon anyone involved in Greek life knows it's a problem. Look at your favorite organization. So many obvious connections that it's a joke. Certain groups dominate different organizations. If you don't believe me, look yourself. It the group in charge has a rival group you will see minimal to few of their rival represented in that organization. It's sadly all about looking involved, but how impressive is it when it's simply nepotism?

Have never heard of "it's not what you know, it's who you know." I got my pt job because of my letters and knowing a mutual contact. I'm sure that's how SOME of the girls get the organization they want.

There is a KD that has held a spot on each of these organizations each year. How can one girl be picked for each organization when others equally qualified never make even one of the organization? Is it parental donations?
