rush outfits
by: pnmIf we're wearing shorts or shoes that aren't "name brands" does this have any effect on how well we will do? I've heard people say things like if we wear tori birch or jack Rogers we will have a better chance. Does not having a ton of money to buy these things put us at a risk of being cut even if we have great recs and gpa?

We can say it based on your value all we want. A lot is based on you, your personality, your recs, and GPA. But no matter what "an idealistic person" says, sadly a lot is based on the girls first impression of you. If you have worn and dated clothes or shoes, it gives the idea that you don't care. I bought some look alike Tori Birch sandals last year for rush. The night before philanthropy parties, we tried on our outfits. My friends told me to ditch the look alikes. They said even though they were new, it just looked like I was trying too hard with cheap clothes. I gues it worked because I go in one of the top 4 houses and I love it. Once your in, no one cares what you look like on a daily basis. That's the irony. It's just that first impression you have to get passed.

No one cares if you have name brand or not. Most girls will be wearing some name brand but I really didn't besides my jack Rodger sandals and I did fine. You want to look trendy, classy, and put together. Lots of girls can achieve that without spending a redic amount on designer clothes

I wore cute printed shorts from a boutique and new sandals and wedges that matched (but not name brand) and got the house I wanted! They've went to shirts most days to help do away with judging on outfits. Focus on: shorts that fit and flatter you and shoes you can comfortably wear all day that look cute!

There are girls in every single house with a crap ton of money that are decked out in designer 24/7. There are also girls in every house that don't come from money and don't own anything designer. No one actually cares because houses like diversity. No one wants a sorority full of designer clones. As long as you look put together no one will know or care how much your outfit cost. You can look cute on any budget these days so just shop smart bit look like yourself, not like you're trying to impress because it will show in your body language.

Being an active and having been on the "other side" during rush, after you see hundreds of girls come into your house each day, it's actually BEYOND refreshing to see a girl not wearing what 99% of the other girls are wearing...it makes you stand out and trust me NOT in a bad way. Just because there's outfit recommendations in the PNM handbook does not mean you have to wear exactly that. You still need to look nice, but this is very possible without wearing name brands such as Lilly Pulitzer and Tori Burch (which in my opinion is beyond basic anyways). It's so nice seeing a girl walk in with her own style instead of looking like a clone.
For example, when I went through rush two years ago, while every girl was wearing their Tori Burch sandals or chacos, I wore Converse with my shorts and rush shirt and I kid you not got at least one compliment from every house. Wear your style and PLEASE I beg you don't wear what everyone else is wearing just because they say so. If a house is going to judge you for essentially being basic and boring then you don't want to be in that house anyways. Having said that, if that's your style and kind of clothing you would normally wear, then by all means go for it.
Wear what you feel confident in and BE CONFIDENT ABOUT IT. Be comfortable with not looking like everyone else.
