They're trying to be politically correct and make it so one girl isn't coming in wearing a Lilly dress and another girl comes in wearing a dress from the thrift store. The truth is, it doesn't matter though. Before you even go through rush those girls stalk the mess out of everyone who signs up. So everything will be the same but you won't get to show off how rich you are until after rush

It isn't about it being less serious. It's about focusing more on "you" than what you're wearing. Which can be a good and a bad thing. A good thing because the girls can't sit there and judge you because they don't like your style of clothing and really have to talk to you, but bad because they don't really get a full idea of "you" and who you are because of your style. Also, if you're wearing a Lilly dress that pretty much shows you have money compared to someone just wearing a dress from Walmart or an obvious hand-me-down.

We are moving towards values-based recruitment with less worrying about the frills and more focus on matching the girls' values with ours. It also takes some of the intimidation factor out for the girls who haven't been groomed their whole lives to be in a sorority and don't know what to expect at recruitment. But they are still picking out their shorts, so Lilly Pulitzer has suffered no lack of representation.
