after joining

I decided that rushing is the right thing for me but there is just one thing I am concerned about. After the first semester, will I be able to hit up random house parties with old friends or are there going to be duties and events with my fraternity that I should attend? Or do you think I can easily combine being greek and doing my own thing from time to time?
I'd really appreciate an honest answer!

This is actually a good question. As far as timing goes, once you become a brother, your time is your own. You'll have events and parties to go to an chapter everyweek, but your no longer a pledge, you have your own time.
As for parties. If your fraternity is throwing a party the same night as someone else's, your going to be at yours. However, if another fraternity is throwing a party and you have friends in that house, you may be able to go to that house. I say MAY because many houses have rivalries and if you go to a party at kappa sig and your an ATO, your likely to get kicked out because the two hate each other. However, if your a KA and you go to a Delt party, you'll be welcome. Those guys get along really well. It's all due to knowing the situation and being wise about it.
Also, this should go without saying, but whatever fraternity you rush, be loyal to it in every aspect. Party going or otherwise.
I hope I answered your question for ya.
