we're pathetic

by: Jo

My brother goes to UNC. The UNC vs Duke game was last night and UNC won - the students rushed Franklin St and had a tremendous party with thousands of people cheering. Duke students had camped out for two months before this game just to get a seat in the stadium. Why don't we have this type of atmosphere? I feel like we're missing out on an important part of college life. I couldn't care less about the Tigers ...I was glued to the UNC game. Just another reason to go anywhere but Mizzou.

I don't think you're a student. I think you're a bitter alum

I'm not a bitter alum. Just one of many here at Mizzou that would rather be somewhere else.

They don't have to rationalize why they're there by saying "we have a good J school".

There is no better rivalry than the UNC Duke one. No other schools can hold a candle to it, so we aren't alone.

If any school that doesn't have a basketball history that rivals Duke-UNC is pathetic, then every other college and university within the 50 states is pathetic.

No, I said WE'RE pathetic....not all the other schools. Out athletics suck. We don't have a single good team to be proud of.

So why didn't you go to UNC or Duke?

I didn't get in. I think it's safe to say that if ANY of us at Mizzou had gotten into UNC or Duke, we'd be there. They're in a whole different league academically. I wish we could at least claim a good team at this school, but we can't even do that.

Gosh, I could have gotten in. My class rank, GPA and SAT exceed the average for both schools, although Duke is so selective nothing is guaranteed. I opted instead to get the best education for the money right here. If you weren't so stupid you would understand that most people don't judge a school only on the strength of its basketball rivalries.

If the degree that is the most important is your last degree, why in the world would someone pay $50,000/year for duke undergrad? I'm going to Mizzou practically for free (I have to pay about $2300/year after scholarships). Since I am a typical white suburban girl, Duke wouldn't have given me much $ at all. Can't for the life of me figure out why someone thinks it's a good idea to needlessly go into debt. I'll do DUKE, UNC or whatever for my MACC or MBA, but there's not a person in the world who would consider it money well spent for a first degree.

^^^^^^ Spoken like someone who has never even considered going on to a professional degree. By the time some of us are done, Mizzou won't even appear on a resume. And we will have no debt to speak of. But, hey, you just keep obsessing about that little bachelor's of yours.

So let me get this straight. You're desperately trying to defend Mizzou by saying an undergraduate degree from here doesn't matter because it's all about graduate school? Can you even see how warped that is?

I'm just saying that this school is perfectly fine for an undergraduate degree, especially when it costs pennies compared to Duke. For many of us, Mizzou is where the real education starts, and it is a fine education at that. I personally know of several sorority sisters who have gone on to extremely well-respected grad/professional schools from here. Johns Hopkins, Kellogg at Northwestern, CalTech and UVa Law among them. So I don't much care whether you are impressed with your education here as long as those schools are.

Duke and UNC accept qualified students. Why not apply? Or perhaps they won't take you.

Hey OP, sorry you're not as smart as your brother. Please feel free to drop out and leave if you hate Mizzou so much. Kthxbye.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, is holding a gun to your head. There is not a legitimate reason in the world that you have to stay here if you hate it so much. There are more than 10,000 colleges and universities in this country. Please choose another because we don't want you here.
