by: Mizz20Is it better to join a bottom tier sorority or drop out and be a GDI? Do guys look down on the lower tier girls more or less than the non Greek ones?

Guys don't care about what sorority you're in, it's the girls who judge each other based on it and even that is mostly contained to just this website. Join the house you feel comfortable in. And hell, if you rush and you love Sigma from the first day then you should go for it. Don't let petty internet drama keep you from enjoying Greek Life.

Give the lower tier a chance BUT try your best to find out if the sorority is having problems (with rush, with their nationals.) When chapters are having problems with their nationals (ex retention issues, not meeting quota) it can create a really terrible atmosphere in the sorority and just make it all around negative and miserable. If they aren't having problems and are just seen as lower tier because they're new or why ever zeta is lower or whatever then don't worry about the frat situation. If you're pretty you'll be known as "the hot sigma" etc

I'll be real with you. Being in a bottom tier sorority doesn't matter. Tiers are something only girls really care for. Guys only care about tiers when it come to Greek Week/Hoco pairings. They either want the hottest girls to have fun with or the most competitive girls to win with. So if you're a relatively pretty and normal girl but end up in a sorority like Phi Mu and go to a frat party a guy will not be caring for your letters, he cares about if you'll sleep with him. You do the same stuff in bottom tier sororities and have the same opportunities with guys. The sorority you join is all about being comfortable with that group of girls. So if you feel like a bottom tier is home take that bid!

I asked a couple of my guy friends this question, and they said that if they like a girl but she's in a bottom tier sorority, they won't ask her out - especially to a frat function. They get ridiculed for being the guy that took a Sigma. Also, they wonder why she didn't get a better sorority and think that something might be " wrong" with her and they don't want to waste the time getting to know her. On the flip side, they get creds for taking a Pi Phi to a function, even if the girl isn't that hot.

Whether or not a guy (or girl) looks down on you for your chapter really depends on his/her own self-confidence. Honestly, there are a lot of people who judge others by their letters, and those are the same people who care about social status their whole lives. The people who only talked to "the cool kids" in high school. It's petty and pathetic, because they could be missing out on befriending an amazing person. Our chapters are so large that there are fantastic individuals everywhere. However I will agree with one of the previous posters: if you are an attractive person in a lower tier house, you will likely get noticed anyway. In my time here I've seen bottom tier guys with top tier girls and vice versa. If you're attractive (and have a personality to match), you'll probably get the Cinderella story you want.
