So what does it take to get into a good sorority. Is it looks alone? I will be going through rush and won't know anyone on this campus. Will I have a chance? I am pretty but not beautiful, top 10% of my class, 30 ACT, lots of activities. I know there aren't any guarantees, but I just wish I knew what sororities are looking for.

You should do fine. Just remember to keep an open mind and be friendly and interested at every house.

There are two aspects to rush. One is how you look "on paper." That's your grades, class rank, ACTs activities, recs, etc. If you look good on paper then you are put on one pile, while others never make it that far. But you also have to prove yourself during rush. You do that with conversation that flows and by showing a real interest. And if you look good on paper and have memorable conversations, you can make it into the best houses. But the reality is you have to have it all.

Well here most of them are looking for people they know or legacies. Not sure what you mean by "good sorority" they are all "good" any you would be lucky to get in any. Though your ACT is "good", it's not enough to do it alone. Most people can't think outside the box, they want the safety of the girl from their high school. Blah Blah Blah

you will be okay. there are 15 great houses here! get recs for ALL of them, look put together, and be friendly and you'll receive a bid. Go in open minded to all chapters because there are wonderful women in all of them despite what the people on this site want you to believe.

I actually think you have a better chance not knowing anyone. For every person from someone's high school that could say something nice about a girl, there is someone who will rip them. I was shocked to find that in cut sessions people pay more attention to the negative comments, and you won't have any from people who know you. You control your own destiny, so be friendly and show some warmth. Look your best. You should do fine.

I agree with Well. I get so tired of petty and mean-spirited remarks during cut sessions, like how someone once flirted your sister's ex-boyfriend or how someone threw up in their desk in second grade. Better to not know anyone. Plus, my pledge class is at least a third out of staters so not knowing anyone can help, not hurt.

THIS is how to get into a top house. You must have outstanding grades and ACTs. You must be attractive in a distinctive way, though not necessarily beautiful. Subdued makeup, no roots, professional haircut. Leadership positions or something else that makes you stand apart (outstanding athletics, musical talent, academic awards, newspaper editor). Lots of recs and a resume to accompany them. And then, at each and every house, you must bring your "A" game, look people in the eye, have sparkling, effortless conversations and really make a connection. For some people it's easy. But even if you have to prepare ahead of time, the effort is worth it. Once you are in a house you will make lifelong friends who, indeed, are like sisters. You won't regret it for a minute. Best of luck to you and we'll see you in August.

It's true^^^, of course, but there are rewards to being in mid and bottom tier houses, too.
