need an opinion

by: Appreciate some help

I am coming to Mizzou next year from out of state. I am a Theta and PiPhi legacy and my family has a history of Greek involvement as alums. I am looking forward to being part of the Greek community. Where I'm from we view what transpired on this campus last fall as a huge positive and I am grateful that Mizzou has made national news for its progressive approach to what had been negative treatment of minorities. In fact, it's what helped me decide to go here instead of my other two top choices, Colorado and Wisconsin. But there are people on this site, who I assume are Greek, who keep talking about what a disaster it was. So here's my question: I am not interested in joining a redneck sorority where this point of view dominates. Can you tell me which houses are more tolerant and forward-thinking? I don't know what I would do if I joined a house and found out my sisters were a bunch of bigots. Thanks, and I value your opinions.

You should do fine in either of your legacy houses (assuming your grades are excellent) because they tend to have women who are thoughtful and smart. The only houses I would stay away from are those without strict grade cuts, because we all know that low I.Q. and intolerance go hand in hand. There are some redneck girls in Greektown, I'm not going to lie. But not in the better houses.

Truth be told, you are better off sticking with the strong, well-rounded houses than the houses just known for superficial, attractive girls. You would probably do fine with Pi Phi, ChiO, ADPi, AXO and Kappa. But stay away from TriDelt, GammaPhi, Alpha Phi and Zeta.

So you think people that disagree with the "protest" and the debacle our SBP exhibited are "redneck"? And you claim to want to associate with "tolerant and forward-thinking" people only? You better check that attitude at the door.

I think most of us agree with her. There is a redneck element at this school and they are the ones who believe minority opinions don't matter. And that's what the protest was all about.

You all need to wake up and realize that you are all being used to further an agenda that had little to do with race. The grad students (including the one who is the son of a man worth $20 million) were mad about the way they were being treated with regard to benefits and tuition and they saw an opportunity to add these grievances to a racism agenda which the media would jump all over. It worked like a charm. No one is saying racism doesn't exist and need to be dealt with. But the whole movement was about way more than that and the other demands for very little press because they weren't buzz worthy. And the SBP fanning the flames on Twitter did make him and the whole movement look bad.

Actually, the agenda had EVERYTHING to do with lack of respect for disenfranchised students. Why in the world does it matter how much his dad is worth? Should we disagree with YOU simply because you aren't paying your own tuition? You really need to stop listening to your parents and open you eyes to reality. The university administration did, and we are better for it.

It seems to me that as you preach tolerance you are decidedly intolerant toward "name callers," aren't you? And, tell me, what's YOUR agenda, because you certainly have one.

I just get tired of those kinds of things going on instead of people having an actual debate about the events that took place. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but people on here who express anything against the protestors are immediately berated and told to "stop listening to your parents" and just leave the university and on and on. My agenda is that I know there are incidents of racism and they definitely needed to be dealt with but just because someone didn't agree with the way things were handled, it doesn't make them wrong.

Our SBP didn't just fan the flames...he LIED. And ruined any credibility the "protest" had or didn't have.

I find this question quiet offensive! When you attend in the Fall 2016 make your own mind up on each house. Stop fuelling the flame. It's better to find your answer on your own then trust others!

Take a look at the Student Pages on Mizzous website. Look at our entire MSA board-THAT WAS VOTED IN BY STUDENTS. It is the totally uneducated, circus seeking people that condone the spectacle made of OUR university. Not only did our SBP LIE, so did Concerned Student-proof is in the video. There were a couple people who are attending this university for FREE that want to further their own future careers and thought making a name for themselves, like they did, would benefit them in the future. Opportunites have since been pulled from certain people-let's all just move forward. And if we need 'safe spaces'-LET'S ALL SHARE IT and not segregate our safe spaces.

Go through recruitment and go where you feel most comfortable. I am a minority and I always feel comfortable in my house... Which was named as one of the "superficial" houses. I've heard all types of people say ignorant things but it's no more or less in Greek town than it is anywhere else. We go to a University where there are a lot of different regions of the Midwest combined. I wouldn't say that there is one house that you would find less "bigot" girls... Even if they are "superficial"... There are superficial people of every race so once again when you go through recruitment I think you will be able to sense what you're looking for.
