cob stigma

by:

I'm confused as to why there's a stigma with cob. I know some houses have to because lots of girls drop or they don't get enough in the fall. Personally, I know our nationals makes us do spring because we typically lose about 10 girls from either graduating or going home for financial reasons at semester. It seems to me that a lot of houses that did cob last year would have this problem? I know a phi, adpi, kd, zeta and axo did cob last year and they are not houses that don't meet quota in the fall.

Because people are petty. It truly doesn't matter.

It shows poor member retention if you're forced to cob, every house goes through a little fluctuation for the reasons stated but if the number is so high that you need to cob then chances are that a significant amount of girls left for other reasons. What I really wish is that we could pick off the new members we don't like and cob in the spring to replace them :)

Membership issues = sisterhood issues. It's not always the case, but it often is the case. The best houses don't do it. It's that simple. And if your national insists that their chapter COBs, the national itself and/or the local chapter may be on shaky financial footing.

All of those reasons might very well indicate problems within the sorority. 1. If you are selective in whom you pledge and pay close attention to recs, money shouldn't be an issue. 2. If you pledge girls who come from a background where academic advancement is expected, the death of a family member wouldn't preclude you from finishing your education. 3. If you pledge girls who meet your grade standards, they won't have grade issues and 4. If you have a great sisterhood and the women you pledge find their niche, it's unlikely they will be unhappy enough to transfer. And if Mizzou isn't a strong school in their major, if they were academically focused they would have known that and would not have decided to attend Mizzou. Am I being harsh? Perhaps. But in the best houses academics and finances aren't really an issue.

1. People lose their jobs, you can't predict that when you rush a girl. You can only account for life to a certain degree when you pledge someone.

2. Someone might be too emotionally distraught over the death of a family member to want to be involved in extra actives. They might move back home to be closer to family.

3. A girls high school GPA is all you can base her academics off when you pledge her. Nobody can predict how that girl might transition to college life.

4. Again, thousands of reasons girls transfer. None of which can be predicted when you're only talking to a girl for ten minutes during rush week.

You sound unemphatic and foolish. Sisterhood issues are sometimes a reason for girls dropping but there are a litany of other issues that you're too ignorant and bullheaded to even acknowledge. Shut up, you don't know what you're talking about.

The only time COB should be a negative thing is when your house has to do it every year.

Example: KD pledges a handful of girls through COB one year and then doesn't COB for awhile after that, no big deal.

Another example: SK COB'd for their first two years because they were allowed to recruit up to average chapter size and now they're not COBing because they're at max. No bid deal.

The problem is when your house COB's every year. So, Sigma and Phi Mu. Both of them have retention issues, Sigma is the smallest house on campus by a hundred girls. When you have to COB every single Spring it not only shows you have a problem keeping girls, but you're willing to take anyone and everyone you can to fill your numbers.
