advice needed

by: Wondering

I will be going through rush in fall and hope to make it into a house. But I'll be honest, I don't think I'm top tier material. I have a 3.8 in high school and a 30 ACT along with some activities, but I am a bit shy and not much of a leader. I've won awards for my art, but I don't think I would stand out in a crowd of PNMs because I'm rather quiet. My sister and mom were in sororities, but they don't have their chapters on this campus, so I'm not a legacy, either. So here's my question, what are the reputations of some of the so-called bottom tier houses and do you think I would fit into any of those? I really would like to pledge because my sister and my mom had such a great experience, and I think being in a sorority is a great way to make friends since I will be from out of state and won't know anyone. Help!!!!

I don't know, it sounds like you could very def. be top or middle tier to me. Not the typical rah-rah houses, perhaps. But you very likely could fit in at AXO or PiPhi, They tend to look beneath the surface. As for the bottom tier houses, Zeta and APhi dwell on more superficial things, but I have heard that KD and Sigma have very strong sisterhoods. SK has a nice mix of girls, so you might fit in there, too. But go through rush with an open mind, smile, look people in the eye and see what happens. I think you'll be surprised that rush isn't nearly as superficial as it is made out to be.

You just have to trust yourself and the system. Go through rush with an open mind and, while I know this sounds bizarre, the right choice will present itself. I don't see any reason to think top houses wouldn't be interested in you. But you might feel more comfortable somewhere else. So just give it your best shot and see what happens.

Wish someone would answer the original question. I, too, am interested in learning the images/reputations of the lower tier houses we don't know much about. For example, which most values academics? Which has the best sisterhood? Which has the highest retention rate?

Retention rate? You are not a pnm, you're the OP posting again trying to get people to talk about bottom tier to promote yourselves for spring rush. Hint don't be pushy or use terms pnms wouldn't know when you're trying to pretend to be a pnm...

Anyone who has ever read anything on this site knows what a retention rate is. It's hardly a super secret code word.

Oh ok so you went into rush asking the girls who had the best retention rate? I highly doubt that

No one asks that during recruitment, but it certainly is something you would want to know beforehand. You also wouldn't ask their policy on legacies or their grade cutoff - but it certainly is something you would want to be aware of beforehand. And there are ways of finding that out, including this site. Now, there are people who are not aware, for example, of return rates and who deny that information exists, but it does. There are people who think that being a legacy makes you a shoo-in, but it doesn't. There are people who think recs don't count, but they do. So just add knowledge about retention rates as something that isn't discussed during rush parties, but the information is out there and PNMs who have it are at an advantage.

Nice try at making a point but wanting to know grade cut offs or legacy policy is not even close to related or similar to asking retention rates. Give it up SK

It's exactly the same.

Not even close... GPA and legacy policy = specific to the pnm, retention rate = sorority specific. Also is something you only care about or understand when you're a sister.. By the attitude you're giving me it's even more clear you're a desperate SK and not a pnm in any way

Why would you think I'm a PNM? And a house's GPA and legacy policy is hardly specific to the PNM. They are standards that are used across the board. Now, it's too bad your house can't keep its members, and perhaps it's because of people like you. But my house has an amazing retention rate, never COBs or does informal and if asked, we would shout it from the mountain. I happen to think PNMs should find out this information because it speaks to the loyalty and pride someone has in their sorority. If it's all about sisterhood, retention says it all.

You're either really stupid or really stubborn. You wrote GPA cutoffs not the sorority's GPA.... Both the cut offs and legacy policy will affect how successful the pnm is during rush, i.e. specific to the girl. And really I'm surprised SK would have good rentention rates being in the bottom three sororities on campus.
