my perspective

by: Xyz

I have a unique perspective on tiers. I am a senior in a solid mid tier sorority (maybe on the lower side of mid-tier) and my cousin is a sophomore in a top tier sorority. We were comparing stories over Thanksgiving and I realized that I am happier in my house than she is in hers, especially during recruitment. I think we went into recruitment with an open mind and were happy to meet everyone, especially OOS girls that didn't know anyone from Missouri. My cousin said they went into recruitment stressed about competing with one or two other houses for the "top girls" that a lot of people knew already from home or high school or whatever. They were all fighting for the same pool of girls and it created a lot of in-house tension. On bid day, they were all about finding out where all of these "top girls" went and stressed about maintaining their "top tier" status. I'm so glad our experience wasn't that stressful. We got an amazing pledge class and I couldn't be happier.

im in a house that this site calls middle tier and I feel the same way about recuitment. During recruitment there was stress about being up so early and staying up so late and wanting your rush crush to accept a bid. But no cattiness. But my roommate from last year is in a house that this site considers top tier, but falling. On bid day she had found out that a couple of girls that her sorority really wanted had actually accepted bids to mine. She texted me things along the lines of "wow how did you guys manage to get those girls? We were sure they would've wanted our house" it made me realize just how glad I am to be in my house and that isn't our attitude when it comes to women in recruitment!

It's always easy being mediocre. It takes work to be the best.

I am in a top house and this sure doesn't describe anything resembling the rush we put on. We target many girls and usually get them. We talk to everyone (who makes our grade cut) with an open mind and love it when someone grabs our attention out of the blue. We have a strong desire to get the best girls we can, but we also want to maintain a close sisterhood and so we make sure we can relate to each and every person to whom we issue a bid. "Who you know" matters very little in my house. Perhaps that's why we have so many out of state girls and girls from small towns. We look first and foremost for people who fit in and perhaps that's why we get so many of them. And on bid day, we are proud of our babies and wish everyone the best, whether they chose our house or not. So perhaps your cousin chose her house for the wrong reasons? Cuz that doesn't sound like much of a sisterhood to me.

People usually end up in the house they were meant to be in. Some PNMs find that they want a tight-knit sisterhood more than being in a competitive "top tier" house, and that's okay. And for those girls who like to compete against other houses for the top rankings, there are sororities for them to join too. It is all about where you fit in best/feel at home.

I'm not sure that the original post is based in reality. I just don't see PiPhi, TriDelt and ChiO appealing to the same types of girls. They each have their own identity and there isn't much crossover.

I think that Pi Phi rushes against both Tri Delt and Chi O. But I don't think that Tri Delt and Chi O rush against each other. Thoughts?

I don't see it. TriDelts are kind of preoccupied with looks whereas PiPhis are just sort of natural hipster girls who can pass a mirror without obsessing. ChiO tends to be more quirky and while they have many pretty girls, they, too, focus on a wider range of interests. I think they all have their niche. I would say that TrioDelt competes more the GPhi and Aphi as the superficial girls. Perhaps ChiO, ADPi and Theta compete. And I don't know about PiPhi. I think they draw from a huge pool and are hard to stereotype.
