not a legacy

by:

Well I really want to rush but the problem is that I'm not a legacy. No one in my family has ever even gone through sorority rush. If I have no rec letters what are my chances of even getting a bid?

You don't have to be a legacy to get recs. Anyone who is a sorority alum can write one for you, and sorority alums are all around. You've got 8 months; start asking now. As for legacies, it sometimes helps with a specific house, but often doesn't. Most of the better houses on this campus could fill an entire pledge class with legacies, but would never do that. So they have to be super critical of the ones they choose. It can hurt as well as help.

That's nice for you, but in my house having a rec REALLY makes a difference.

To "Nice": Not true! My house literally throws away all of the rec letters lol

That isn't true, of course, because during rush the alums and chapter advisers are swarming like bees. If they thought for a moment that recs weren't considered, your chapter would be in huge trouble. Recs remain the very best way to find out more about a PNM than the rush form asks. If your house, indeed, doesn't pay much attention to recs, it is easy to see why you are not top tier and not competing for the best and the brightest.

If you can get recs get them-if not don't worry. I had them for 3-not top houses. I ended up in a top house-without a rec. On this website that would never happen-but I will tell you in real life-I ended up in what this site calls a top house of pretty, smart girls. AND I was from out of state. NO REC LETTER. Was it the best choice on my part-I am hoping time will tell me it was. Go with your gut feeling, don't feel like you need recs-and trust your feelings and don't give in to peer pressure-I was being asked back by a house everyone loved and wanted and I gave in to that. As I said-hopefully time will make me feel like I made the right decision. But do not stress about recs-DEFINITELY not needed, even for top houses.
