rushing as a minority with a 3.4 gpa

by:

I plan on attending Mizzou next fall and I really wanted to join a sorority. What are my chances of getting into a sorority if I have a 3.4 GPA and am also a minority?

It depends on the house and the other things you bring to the table. A 3.4 is OK, but not great. (Also, is that weighted or unweighted?) It might exclude you from some houses, but not most. But if you have leadership, athletic or honors on your resume, or, for example, you were editor of your h.s. newspaper, that would help. There also are houses that are committed to diversity and those are the houses you would want to be in, anyway. So I would say go for it because there's a very good chance you will have a great rush and wind up in a great house.

The 3.4 is my weighted GPA. I'm a student ambassador, involved in marching band, and have taken Honors English and an IB class

Big high school? Little high school? In state? Out of state? Big city? Little city? Do you know anyone on campus? Can you boost some of your extracurriculars, like adding some volunteer work? And do you or any of your relatives know alums who could write recommendations to their sorority about you? I know that's a tough one because sororities for so long were closed to minority women. Perhaps teachers or someone in church? If you know one person who can write a rec, that person might know others.

My school has about 1200 kids. I'm also in a nursing class at another school I go to before my main school. I'm currently going through clinicals at a nursing home. I'm also in the A+ Program. No one in my family has ever done sorority rush.

You sounds like a good candidate for rush. But you really should see if you can find someone to write some recommendations for you. I don't want to sound condescending if you already know this, but "recs" are completed by sorority alums and sent directly to the chapter before rush starts. It is a form that allows the alum to tell the chapter more about a student than the basic registration form calls for. You also can have the alum attach your resume. You have plenty of time, so start asking at work or ask your teachers or guidance counselor or someone at church if they are alums of some of the Mizzou sororities, or if they know some alums. If there were a way to know who you are I would ask my mom and her friends to do it for you, but I don't see how that's possible. But start networking now and see if you can gain this advantage.
