upcoming informal

by:

I want to do informal recruitment soon, but I'm from out of state and don't have many connections in houses. I went through formal recruitment, but was unfortunately released on bid day. I want to be a part of a house more than anything, but I worry I will not have that chance since I only know one girl in a house (my roommate) who is a Delta Gamma. I know which houses I am extremely interested in if they do informal, but I worry that since I don't know many people in houses, I will not be given a chance. Don't think I'm conceited, I just want to share a little bit about myself in order to get some thoughts. I had a 3.75 GPA in high school, was involved with community service, and I'd like to think I'm somewhat attractive! Thoughts? If I list the houses I'm interested in, could somebody tell me if I have at least a slim chance? Thanks!

Sadly, the way informal is structured now you dojn't have much of a chance except with DG. I would make an effort to get to know as many of your roommates friends as possible, especially any who are not freshmen since those living in the house tend to have a bit more influence in the process. Unfortunately, when it comes to other houses you can do everything right (register with PHC, contact the rush chair etc. ) and never hear a thing back. And that's just wrong because if we are going to have an informal system, it has to be as fair as possible. And when it's only about who you know, that's not fair. If I were you, I would work on getting outstanding grades, get involved in some organizations on campus and get to know as many women as possible and then go through formal rush next year. That's your best chance.

If you want fair then go through formal again. There's a reason it's called informal recruitment here and not springs Rush. Because it's informal and nobody has to do it if they don't want. They can take whoever and do whatever they want since their space is limited.

No one is putting a gun to anyone's head in fall, either. Just the fact that they can "take whoever they want," instead of giving everyone a chance who signs up, is blatantly discriminatory. I understand that these are generally bottom tier houses who do informal and they don't really have very high standards, but it just seems wrong. It's like passing out invitations to your birthday party at school without inviting the whole class. It's tacky and tasteless and if they aren't going to put much effort into it, they pretty much get what they deserve.

Would I even be given a chance as a sophomore?

It's just my opinion, but I think you would have a much better chance, and likely would get into a better house, if you went through formal rush as a sophomore. But you have to have great grades, get involved in some activities, do some volunteer work and get to know some girls already in houses so that you can increase the likelihood that you will both look good on paper and have an advocate in the house. Why not try both? Informal rush is pretty cliquey, but you never know. There might be a house out there that will go the extra mile and invite people they don't already know.
