trouble ahead

by:

I am a soph in a house that doesn't COB, but my roommate (who is black) told me two freshmen girls from her high school are considering filing a discrimination suit against Greek Life for not considering women of color during informal rush. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

There are chapters that have taken minorities during informal recruitment the past couple of years, so I highly doubt these girls can prove any discrimination. The "secret" is most chapters only invite their friends to informal events and disregard the COB list from PHA. Also, even if these girls did get to go to a chapter's event they don't HAVE to give all girls of color a bid just because they are minorities. It's very possible they aren't qualified (gpa, involvement, etc.), or they just don't get a long well with the girls in the chapter. Plenty of girls, of all races, think they are qualified to be Greek , but just don't make the cut.

I did not say that they are unqualified by being a minority. I said that not all minority girls are qualified, for example maybe she has really bad grades and a chapter can't overlook that. I also believe you're making a generalization about friendships on this campus. White sorority girls DO have friends that are minorities, and I believe those girls, in this scenario, would get invited to informal recruitment events.

Also, yes the informal recruitment system can be seen as unfair to all(not just minorities)nongreek girls, who don't have friends that are Greek. The reason chapters recruit their friends generally over other nongreeks is because 1) They already know them so conversations aren't forced during events 2) That COB has a girl advocating for her from the inside during selection (same thing happens during formal recruitment) 3) They generally blend in better with the newest pledge class and don't feel "left out" for being a COB which makes them less of a risk for dropping.
My suggestion is if you want to be Greek put forth some effort and make friends with Greek girls, then the process becomes much easier. Plus making friends really can't hurt you, worst thing that happens is you "trial and error" your social networking skill, and best thing that could happen is you get a life long friend or sister out of it.

So you are saying all a girl has to do to get a bid during informal rush is to suddenly become best friends with someone who is spending all of her free time already on sorority events with her sorority sisters. But, overnight, she will somehow be besties with someohe she just met in the dorm? Dream on. It's a closed system that is inherently unfair. And, here's something else we all know, when the bottom feeders COB (and that's who usually does ii) and only chooses friends of bottom feeders, they will never get ahead.

"stupid" loses any credibility she may have had in her argument when she uses terms like "bottom feeders." Clearly you have absolutely no concern for the well being of the panhellenic community. Don't try to pretend otherwise while using that kind of language.

I am on exec and my house prob. will do informal next semester. You can bet that we are going to pay attention to the PanHell list because we don't want to be named in a lawsuit. And, also, it's the fair thing to do. In fact, PanHell should insist that houses can ONLY take girls who have signed up on that list. Otherwise, yes, these girls can make a strong case that they were discriminated against if they do all the right things and don't even get an invitation to an event.

Why did your roommate not get a bid during formal rush? Anyone of color was heavily sought after if they made the grade cuts. My rush crush was grabbed up by another house and dropped us. We were butthurt but she's happy where she is.

Huh? My roommate DID get a bid during formal rush. She's in my house and that's why we're roommates. We're in the same pledge class and are sophomores. The girls who are considering the lawsuit are freshmen this year who she knew from high school. But isn't it interesting that someone assumed that if a white person and a black person are living together that only the white person is in a sorority??????????????

I made a bad assumption that she was trying to cob. I also incorrectly assumed you were a freshman. Sorry. I just would be surprised that any African American who made grade cuts would have less than the max houses to choose from. All houses want diversity-no doubt! even though my house and others are incorrectly accused of racism.

I'm black and was a sophomore and I qualified and I kept the maximum amount of houses each round and the girls I talked to in EVERY house made me feel so comfortable I actually had a hard time cutting houses. This is just a fake post trying to cause drama. Every girl that went through recruitment were looked at the same way and informal is also going to be fair this year as well since PHA is taking over it. So stop whoever you are

No one is talking about formal rush. I am pleased that you did so well during recruitment and I know many other women of color did, too. This is exclusively about informal rush and how, even though you can do everything right, sign up through PanHell, contact the individual houses, etc., there is no guarantee you will be asked to even one event. The fact that some girls ARE invited, and that they happen to be white, sends up a big red flag. Unless things are done fairly and are closely monitored, we have no idea why women of color rarely get a bid during informal rush. So unless your experience was during informal or COBing, I respectfully think you don't know what you are talking about. And if you are calling BS re. discrimination, I am calling BS that you are a woman of color. Because no member of a minority group would want the cards to be stacked against other minorities the way it is now.

are you serious? i'm hispanic and COB'd, and i have a friend who is black who also COB'd. there is no vendetta against people of color. there are so many other factors that go into recruitment and COB, and color is not one of them. stop making stuff up. maybe there would be more people of color in greek life if they RUSHED.
