out of state

by:

I am a senior in high school who will be going through rush next August. I am an honor student, was a homecoming princess twice and am editor of my h.s. newspaper (and plan to major in journalism). I am a TriDelt and DG legacy (mom and sister, neither of whom went to Mizzou). I am from out of state (Colorado) and have heard from a friend at Mizzou who went through rush that TriDelts really don't take many out-of-state girls, and that they choose from a fairly small circle of St. Louis high schools. I realize it's early and also that being a legacy doesn't mean much these days, but do you think TriDelt would consider someone from out of state? How about DG? Are there other houses that would be more welcoming to someone like me who only knows a couple of girls on this campus? Thanks for your time.

It sounds as if you have a lot to offer, so don't be too discouraged that TriDelt doesn't really reach out to out-of-state girls. There are many houses that are less cliquey and where you might feel more comfortable anyway since you seem to be smart. Give every house a try when you go through rush. Especially houses like PiPhi and ChiO.

I am from out of state and preffed Tri Delt. I chose another house but they were my 2nd choice. I never felt like they weren't welcoming in any way.

I am from a Dallas suburb and went through recruitment two years ago. I felt welcome at every house except TriDelt. In fact, they are the only house I liked that cut me. I wound up in a top tier house and got my first choice after not being asked back to TriDelt on the last day and I'm very happy where I am. But when I went to TriDelt before being cut I have to say they asked totally naive questions as if Dallas was in another solar system. I really felt as if I was being treated like an anomaly. I think their comfort zone is mainly St. Louis and it shows. Pretty girls, nice house, but kind of small-minded.

Tri delt claims to be top tier. sadly the few girls they take from out of state are totally lost. Anyone who knows Mizzou-if you grow up in Missouri-you already know Tri Delt is your home town. the few girls they take from out of town-usually from the suburbs of Chicago-are token girls who are lost on pref day because they can't connect. if you are from St Louis you know its a total completion-but too many are choosing to go elsewhere. Too many sleezy scandals with tri delt-even the university is pulling back support on this historically strong mizzou chapter. After the past 2 years scandals-too many are directing their funds to strictly alumni, honors or specific department scholarships. Hard hit for tri delt.

I get some of what you are saying but some of it is so confusing! yes(and I can speak SPECIFICALLY ON TRI DELT FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE) -tri delt takes their st Louis girls first. they take the random Chicago girls next who basically had no connections in highschool but are smart and pretty. THOSE are the random girls you talk to during recruitment-and if you meet them on pref day its only because you are one of the few Chicago girls coming through-thus-getting no idea what the house is about because the girls you are talking to are not at all connected.. there is a reason this house is known as cliquey. They have that certain percentage drop out every year(almost always out of state girls)-they claim them to be studying abroad or graduating early-but in fact they are typically first semester juniors dropping out after living in house. and that is all FACT.This house is only built up on this website-by those that live and breath Missouri.

OP, it is mandatory for DG to offer a bid to every legacy, so as long as your mom, NOT SISTER, was a DG, you at least have one bid waiting for you.

How can they do that? Isn't their entire bid list made up of DGs then? I know my house could fill two pledge classes with just legacies.

This is not true. DG encourages pledging legacies but it IS NOT MANDATORY

I am a DG. Not here but a different school in the SEC and if they are anything like my school we take legacies into huge consideration! There has to be a REALLY good reason to cut a legacy and we have to call the mom or sister or grandmother informing them we cut them out of respect and legacies are always placed first on our bid list. However we are NOT required to take ANY ONE. If you make it to pref you will be fine but there is still a small chance of getting cut during the other rounds! Most of this is national policy so it's pretty much the same at evey chapter I think!

Also it doesn't matter if it's mom or sister. A legacy is a legacy in our book and they are looked at the same!

She would be bored to death as a TriDelt and frustrated because she could do better than DG. Sounds like PiPhi or ADPi are the houses for her. Both have smart girls who aren't as provincial. I had wonderful conversations at both about my time abroad as an AFS student in South Africa and one of the girls I spoke with had even been to Johannesburg, where I lived. Then I went to TriDelt, where we talked about my hair. LOL!

This girl clearly should go through rush with an open mind. I can think of four or five other excellent houses (Theta, PiPhi, ChiO, ADPi and AXO) where she would be much happier than TriDelt. It sounds like she has a lot going for her and TriDelt is too provincial a house for someone who wouldn't be a part of a cliquey St. Louis dominated house. Only St. Louis girls think they are all that, and the rest of us, particularly from out of state, think that's kind of cute. But it gets old quick. Hint: if you think St. Louis is the center of the universe, you need to get out more.

I am tri delt baby and there is literally a girl in my pledge class that is from Colorado so don't listen to everyone else. Just go into rush with an open mind a house isn't gonna cut you if your from out of state!

An illiterate TriDelt. I guess we know now who is helping to bring the TriDelt GPA down.

you'll end up wherever you're supposed to be! DG does take a lot of legacies and tri delta is a good house if you're meant to be there. Go in with an open mind and you'll find where you belong! promise!

I am from out-of-state and found that there were two attitudes about my not being from Missouri. One was from some of the more "worldly" houses (for lack of a better word) with members who thought it was interesting that I chose Missouri even though it is 450 miles away from my home. We found lots to talk about. The other was from girls who only seemed to want to talk about their high school in St. Louis. I cut TriDelt, Gamma Phi, SK and Alpha Phi quite early in the process because there just wasn't much common ground. I neither know nor care about which high school girls have gone to because that's in the past. What I looked for was a house that appreciated me for what I could offer and happened to wind up in a pledge class that is about 30% out-of-state. Couldn't be happier.

I am from the Missouri side of Kansas City and when I went through rush a TriDelt from St. Louis asked me why I didn't stay in state for school and go to KU. I thought she was joking, but she wasn't. And then I cut TriDelt.
