what are they looking for?
by: OKSomeone in a recent post who was unhappy with her choices on pref day said she couldn't figure out what the top houses were looking for. This is a legit question. Could someone in some of the top houses (ChiO, PiPhi, TriDelt, Theta) tell us a bit about your cut sessions, what you were looking for in rush and what it took for someone to stand apart (in a good way). You don't have to tell what house you are from, but please let us know what some of the factors are when you make your decisions.

Several years ago we were known as the house that mostly had business majors. That's a great career and we still have some people who want to be in finance or accounting or whatever, but we made a much stronger effort to get a cross-section of majors. And when we look at someone's resume, we are looking for what we sometimes refer to their "third thing." In other words, they probably have great grades and ACTs, and perhaps leadership or elected positions in school. That's pretty typical. But then we ask "what's their third thing." That might be homecoming queen or it might be 200 volunteer hours at a hospital or it might be single-handedly starting a club volleyball team or it might be editor of their award-winning school newspaper. But we look for something that makes the person stand apart in a good way.

I'm in what most people consider to be a top house and we start with a base line: excellent grades, an ACT above 27 or 28, attractive (which doesn't mean beautiful, but rather well put together) and excellent recs. Then we look at what the person will add to our house. It might be an outstanding background in science or math (to help others in the house pass those tough required classes), it might be photography skills for our website or Facebook page, it might be a great singing voice for skits or piano ability or athletic skills at the state or national level. It's never one thing. But we really just don't take anyone who is typical. If a person looks great on paper, they also have to pass the strictest test of all: being a good conversationalist and coming across as someone we can see ourselves being friends with for the long haul. It's hard to explain, but there just has to be a certain quality.

Now that we have seen the new members out and about, I think it's pretty evident that it's not just about looks. There are pretty girls in every sorority. so I agree there is some sort of "it" factor that the best houses look for. And that's what sets them apart.

So Homecoming queen or cheerleader gets the "golden ticket"...but girls that excel in other areas of high school get cut?! Seems a whole lot like high school all over again.
