what are they looking for?

by: OK

Someone in a recent post who was unhappy with her choices on pref day said she couldn't figure out what the top houses were looking for. This is a legit question. Could someone in some of the top houses (ChiO, PiPhi, TriDelt, Theta) tell us a bit about your cut sessions, what you were looking for in rush and what it took for someone to stand apart (in a good way). You don't have to tell what house you are from, but please let us know what some of the factors are when you make your decisions.

Several years ago we were known as the house that mostly had business majors. That's a great career and we still have some people who want to be in finance or accounting or whatever, but we made a much stronger effort to get a cross-section of majors. And when we look at someone's resume, we are looking for what we sometimes refer to their "third thing." In other words, they probably have great grades and ACTs, and perhaps leadership or elected positions in school. That's pretty typical. But then we ask "what's their third thing." That might be homecoming queen or it might be 200 volunteer hours at a hospital or it might be single-handedly starting a club volleyball team or it might be editor of their award-winning school newspaper. But we look for something that makes the person stand apart in a good way.

So Homecoming queen or cheerleader gets the "golden ticket"...but girls that excel in other areas of high school get cut?! Seems a whole lot like high school all over again.

What are you talking about? What about this do you not understand? "That might be homecoming queen or it might be 200 volunteer hours at a hospital or it might be single-handedly starting a club volleyball team or it might be editor of their award-winning school newspaper. But we look for something that makes the person stand apart in a good way." And where in the world did you get the idea that a cheerleader automatically gets the golden ticket? No wonder you didn't make the cut. You can't read and your powers of deduction suck.

so, I'm a business finance major...are you saying I could have been cut because you want to steer away from what I chose as my career path? superficial

Just saying we wouldn't take you simply because you were a business major. If you met all of the other qualifications and were a business major, well, welcome aboard. But from what I understand business majors were choosing business majors because that was their comfort zone and were were excluding others because of their majors. We actually don't have a disproportionate number of accounting or finance majors now, so it's a moot point. But there are a lot of things we do for the greater good and to be inclusive. It is what it is. And, yes, it's absolutely subjective.

I don't get college girls not understanding what an example is. You girls are too stupid to even be in a house.

I'm in what most people consider to be a top house and we start with a base line: excellent grades, an ACT above 27 or 28, attractive (which doesn't mean beautiful, but rather well put together) and excellent recs. Then we look at what the person will add to our house. It might be an outstanding background in science or math (to help others in the house pass those tough required classes), it might be photography skills for our website or Facebook page, it might be a great singing voice for skits or piano ability or athletic skills at the state or national level. It's never one thing. But we really just don't take anyone who is typical. If a person looks great on paper, they also have to pass the strictest test of all: being a good conversationalist and coming across as someone we can see ourselves being friends with for the long haul. It's hard to explain, but there just has to be a certain quality.

What is scary about this conversation? Surely you must know that for the top houses it's not just about looks. Look at their GPA. Look at the type of rush they put on. Look at their new members. They don't settle.

Most of them take people they know from high school. Deny it all you want, but everybody knows it's true. I'm not saying this is their whole pledge class because there are some out of state girls. They definitely fill their St. Louis girl quota with their high school buddies.

So you're saying a girl who has a 4.0+ grade point average, an ACT score of 28 or higher, is accomplished with both high school and other activities like volunteering, and is a good conversationalist will be "considered" for your house? WOW, I guess I feel SO good/thankful because you invited me back for one of the rounds of recruitment. PLEASE tell me that whether I am a "hot" girl or not has NOTHING to do with your decisions...?! PLEASE, all of you "top tier" girls are SO superficial.

Are you saying that ChiO, PiPhi and Theta are just filled with hot St. Louis girls? Do you even go to this school? And what is superficial about insisting someone be able to carry on a conversation, have good grades and excel in a variety of areas?

Membership selection is private so you won't find legitimate answers on this site.

Now that we have seen the new members out and about, I think it's pretty evident that it's not just about looks. There are pretty girls in every sorority. so I agree there is some sort of "it" factor that the best houses look for. And that's what sets them apart.

None of the posts on here are by college girls. They all know that membership selection is PRIVATE and you're not ever going to know what we consider and what we don't. If we didn't give you a bid, we didn't think you'd fit in.
