out of state - fraternity question

by: Newb

I have another year but I am applying to Mizzou (just about done). Assuming I end there and go through formal rush in June 2016, how difficult is it for an outsider during rush? I have a sister that went to a Southern school and it worked out well for her but half the houses cut her day one (regardless of their social tier). She later found out it was because she's not from the State or the region.

No one in my area to pull experiences from as most that go to the SEC end up in Bama, Auburn, Ole Miss, USC (Columbia) and a few at UGA.. That's about 12 students out of 800. A couple went to Mizzou in the last 4 years but no one I know.

I have been to Athens to visit sister and Bama. I liked both schools but I really enjoyed the people we met in Missouri and people seemed more similar to California. Any thoughts or ideas about your school or others in the SEC/Midwest. I visited KU on my visit as well but not SEC and not as nice. Going to look at USC (Columbia) later this month when I visit UGA. Any tips is appreciated.

It doesn't matter here at Mizzou. Even though were in the SEC, we're not as cliquey as other schools. I'm an in-stater and over half my pledge class is from out-of-state.

Thank you. That's how I felt meeting people overall. I just need to check the school in the winter now to make sure but I don't think it will be a problem.

My opinion was the campus and people were amazing compared to KU, Bama and UGA. But Columbia was no Athens. Although a lot had to do with my sister showing me around at night.

You should pick a school first and foremost according to how it is ranked nationally for your major, not its Greek system. Look at the stats on hiring in your major. If you are interested in journalism or accounting, obviously you would choose Mizzou (and there are other very strong majors here, too). If you are choosing a school simply based on social life you really have skewed priorities.

Just Saying, I agree. I don't know what I want to major in yet so I am leaning toward business. I've looked at business schools I believe I can get into. I also consider schools away from home to get some diversity. I want a large school with a football team. I look at possible academic scholarships.

I weight all these and the schools I visited match my criteria (except UGA as its hard to get into). Mizzou just stood out among the other schools so far. Now I am looking at the Greek life, the college town, etc. I got a great feel for it on tour but summer didn't give me the full student body nor Greek life so I am asking about it. It's one of my final deciding points.

Like I said before I am going to USC to visit and I might look at Ole Miss or Arkansas. Also I went to Florida State my freshman year but it was so-so for me.

I appreciate your input though.

Academically you will find Mizzou is ahead of Arkansas, Alabama, Auburn and U South Carolina. Mizzou also has a more diverse student body because its journalism school attracts outstanding students from around the nation who want the best. UGa is an outstanding school and its B School is probably more respected than Mizzou's (except for accounting). You will get a complete college experience at Missouri and one that is more open-minded than most of the SEC schools, if that matters to you. With the exception of a handful of people, no one here revers the confederate flag or makes excuses for it.

Thanks Well... Those were my impressions during my visit. I liked the entrepreneurial specialty in Management. I was impressed with Greek Town. And the outdoors were great too. Got to do some free surfing and tried wakeboarding. My varsity sport is surfing and the transition is decent. Loved the lakes and part of the Ozarks I saw too. No ocean, desert or big mountain ranges but what a great state. And KC was nice too. \n\n\n\n\n

Just a few rush tips from me, a guy that just went through the process. So to start, I was under the impression that freshman absolutely don't live in house. This is a complete myth. This is an observation I made, but some may disagree: if you can, live in house. You'll have a better chance at receiving a bid. Also if you're doing any informal rush stuff, try to go with a friend (this probably applies to formal recruitment too). It's just easier to mesh with dudes if you have someone you're already comfortable with! Good Luck!
