grades low because of treatment should i tell them

by: Depressed

I missed a lot of school this year because I was in the hospital for treatment. Should I tell them that when I sign up for rush?

This is exactly what rec letters are designed for. Get working on finding alumnae members who can write you a reference that explains what your grade situation is. All houses can make exceptions to their grade requirements with permission, if they want to. If you have a genuine excuse for your grades, make sure the houses know about it before rush starts. The only way to do this is with rec letters.

If you wait until the first round of recruitment and try to explain it to members one on one, you will run the risk that you are already on a predetermined release list solely because of your grades and that your story may not get communicated properly. It's a whirlwind experience for the active members who are meeting hundreds of women. Do yourself a favor and get that message out there before recruitment starts.

I was sick a lot through high school dealing with certain issues and the best thing to do would be to contact PHA and explain the situation and they can probably help you out!

I explained my situation in the "concerns" section when I registered. Should I email PHA too?

You could call them! With so many girls going through recruitment you want to make sure they know that. Filling out a form is just that not everyone will be able to read them all.

Feel free to email and call PHA if you would like. But I can tell you that my house would want that info to come in the form of a rec letter. Anyone can tell PHA anything. I don't mean to be harsh, but I trust something coming from an alumna of my sorority more than I would trust your self-report to PHA, who likely aren't going to take the time to verify what you have said.

If you still make the grade cut, I wouldn't say anything. I don't know what your health concern was (nor should you specify it on this website), but you have to decide also whether you want everyone to know about it or not. If everything is fine now and it's all in the past, you might just want to wait a year before going through rush and use your college GPA if that's easier that putting it all out there. that also might give you a chance to really bounce back since freshman year can be a time of significant pressure.
