Every house is different with grade cuts, and that falls under the "membership selection" category that is confidential. I can say (anonymously) that my house will release all non-legacies with less than a 3.2 after the first round. All legacies with less than a 3.2 will be released after second round. Special exceptions may be made, but only with the approval of nationals. We can usually negotiate one or two exceptions a year, but there must be pretty special circumstances.

Is it common for grade cuts to be all above a 3.0?

A 3.5 is okay, most PNMs will have a between a 3.4-3.7 and then the rest will be the 3.9s and 4.0.
Usually all grade cuts are made above a 3.0 and a few exceptions are made for legacies, girls that stand out, etc.
with a 3.5 a house like Theta or Chi O may cut you because they look for the really high grades and such.
My house has a 3.4 grade cut for the first round and legacies have a 3.2. Then after the second round we don't look as much at grades but when it comes to preference day we look at grades again:

When they say a GPA cut they are talking about high school GPAs. Is there a different cutoff for a college GPA of say a 3.2?

Are we talking weighted grades or un-weighted? My h.s. didn't give any boosts for honors or AP classes like some schools do. Do you take that into account? Unweighted, I'm a 3.6, but weighted, would be higher.

It seemed like last year there may have been 1 or 2 sororities that actually have a mathematical calculation for grades. I don't think most look that close at the actual weighted or unweighted and I know they don't even take into consideration the type of high school you went to unless it's one they are familiar with like from St. Louis. But if you are out of state, they don't have a clue nor do they put the time into finding out what kind of school, it's just the number which doesn't mean jack crap. Thats been my experience!!

well, I hope when houses are making grade cuts you a looking at quality of coursework and ACT scores. Dropping someone who has a 3.5 with all AP classes and a 33 ACT and keeping a 3.9 who took only lowest level high school classes and got a 24 ACT might not be in the houses' best long term interest academically. There's got to be more too it then just a straight GPA cut, right?

We actually weigh ACT/SAT scores more heavily. It seems like these days everyone graduates from high school with mostly A's, but those A's don't mean much if all they have to show for it is a 25 ACT.

Although houses have grade cuts, the grade cute aren't taken as seriously as the ACT is, at least for my house. If a PNM doesn't have outstanding grades but they have a good ACT score (like 29+) we will let her pass on the grade cuts. The ACT is a predictor of how well you will do in college so we weigh that more heavily.

Well I'm a transfer and went to community college so u didn't need to take the ACTs. I only have my college GPA (3.2). Will not having the ACTs hurt me if I have a college GPA?
