no bid

by: PNM

I am really freaking out about not getting a bid. How many girls don't get bids on bid days? How do you find out if you don't get a bid? Any tips?

About 7% of the women who signed up for recruitment last year and who also ended up without a bid were released from all houses. 7%. The other 93% didn't receive a bid because they chose not to. They dropped out, or they weren't willing to accept a bid from all the houses were they attended a preference party.

If you want a bid, and if you have grades that exceed the minimum cut for all houses (I don't know what that number is), you don't have a criminal record or something extreme like that, and you are willing to accept a bid from any of the 15 houses, you will be fine.

This is college. This is a new, competitive environment. This is not where Mommy and Daddy tell you are perfect in every way or where your teachers bend over backwards to make sure you get an A or where the coach lets everyone play because it's the fair thing to do. There will be girls who paid their money to take a chance on rush, and who have their hearts broken. Many drop out because they think they should have had better results than they did. Some believe they are perfect or beautiful or brilliant or whatever and are just now catching on that might not be true. But I can assure you EVERYONE learns valuable things during rush that will help them in the future, whether they get a bid or not. In many ways it's the perfect first step to a new life. So be humble, embrace the possibilities and SMILE as you take that first step into the unknown. You will be a better person for it.

Who are you to judge my rush experience? I did just fine, thank you, but the bigger lesson is that I've become much more insightful and aware of my assets and liabilities. Save the pep talk for someone who needs it.
