which is better?
by: confusedI went to an extremely competitive International Baccalaureate high school. It accepted only top students and once you were accepted the grade scale was very strict (95-100=A, 90-95=B, 85-90=C and below 85 you were kicked out). As a result, I graduated with the equivalent of a 3.5, which actually was quite good, but A's were really hard to get. I also earned 31 college credits (in Calc, Stats, Physics, Chem, History, English Lit , Psych and more). However, since I am from out of state, no one really knows a thing about this school and likely will just look at my 3.4, which by most high school standards isn't very good. So here's my question: I am signed up for rush but really am interested only in a house where academics are important (if they will have me) since I am pre-med. Would it be better if I waited until sophomore year to rush and use my college GPA? The problem with that is that I will be graduating in three years, so if I waited I would graduate the year I am living in the house and that would be weird. I would appreciate any advice.

I am the Scholarship Chair at my house and also on the rush committee. I will be watching for you because you are just the kind of student we want. In fact, we had several girls in our most recent pledge class who will be graduating in three years, so you will feel at home. We pay close attention to SATs as well as ACTs -- and your SATs are very impressive -- so don't worry about that at all. We also have several girls who went through IB programs, so we are familiar with that, too. Having said that, I wound absolutely encourage you to go through recruitment as a freshman because the houses you will be interested in will understand the rigor of your high school (unlike so many schools where A's seem to be the standard grade). I also would encourage you to get recs -- from as many sororities as possible. That's the best way for someone to explain your situation and what an outstanding member you are likely to be.

My house actually pays more attention to ACT/SAT scores than GPA, so you will be fine. That's the thing: GPA doesn't really mean much any more because A's are so common. What we've found, in fact, is that at some private schools its not uncommon for someone going through recruitment to have a 3.8 or 3.9, but a 23 or 24 ACT. That tells an important story: that A's are pretty easy to get and that their schools just aren't that difficult -- and that they really aren't doing a very good job of educating kids. So when we are looking for someone who can help boost our house GPA, the high SAT/ACT students are golden. I also agree with the person who said you should get as many recs as possible. I also am curious: why did you choose Mizzou?

Most houses realize that the ACT is popular here (midwest/south) and the SAT on the coasts so they have a minimum for the SAT's as well.
