st. louis girls
by: PnmSo I'm not from around here at all, and I was hearing that sororities are really cliquey with girls from St. Louis. I don't want a lesser chance because I'm going into Mizzou with nobody knowing me.

You will have a lesser chance in houses like tri delt and DG and chi o because the girls in those houses choose their younger friends to be their sisters. Not all the girls in those houses are St. Louis, but generally, the ones who appear happiest and most included are the stl girls in those houses. It is a huge downfall and issue that they fail to recognize.

You'll do really well in houses like Pi Phi, Phi Mu, KD, SK and even AXO who don't usually pay a lot of attention to where you are from. Most houses are going to base decisions upon who you are and not where you are from. There are a lot of houses where the girls know each other from high school and they base their members off that but each house is still diverse

I also am from out of state and I was appalled at how some houses seem to draw exclusively from St. Louis and are really cliquey. I would put TriDelt, DG, GPhi and Kappa in that category. In each of these houses I was asked the dreaded question "What high school did you go to," even though they had that information. It's as if these houses thought high school was the end-all and be-all and wanted to live those days over again. I really didn't feel comfortable there and got rid of those houses right away. They probably didn't want me anyway. The most welcoming houses also were the most geographically diverse: ADPi, AXO, PiPhi and Theta. I felt really comfortable there and thought each was a place I could expand my horizons. I wound up joining one of those and found that my pledge class had girls from all over the country.

The only reason I would ever ask the question "What high school did you go to?" during rush is because I'm from St. Louis and everyone generally knows at least one person from each high school. I would never look down on someone for not being from STL but it's just something interesting to talk about during rush since we might know some of the same people. If not, no harm done, but for me it's honestly just something to talk about that's the not the typical major or dorm question. I am just as welcoming and open towards out of state people. In fact, my pledge daughter who I met and connected with during rush is from Minnesota

I have a few friends in tri delt that are not from St. Louis, and while they say they have friends and love their house, their only friends in the house are also the girls not from prime St. Louis high schools. And they can't STAND that half the house is comprised of the BS St. Louis girls who are all from the same surrounding high schools or were all friends with each other when they were in high school. My friends say they actually do only feel like they're there is because they had to be to make their nationals happy. Otherwise it was all about who your friends were in high school. It's a house divided. I'm sorry but that is just pitiful and the fact is im sure we all know it's true, too. Way to go, tri delt/eureka/Marquette/Lafayette/private high school!

This is why I've never seen TriDelt as the top house. They may have their choice of who they get, but they really operate within a limited sphere. It's a very insular, cliquey house. Girls from St. Louis who already have friends in the house and who get a bid generally are happy because they don't have to stretch and grow in that house: it's just an extension of high school. But houses like ChiO, PiPhi, ADPi and Theta offer an environment where members can expand their horizons and go beyond high school experiences. Here's a case in point: I am a summer orientation leader and was talking with others about the 4th of July holiday. One of the girls was thrilled to be able to go back to St. Louis and just hang out with her high school friends, two of whom also happen to be in her sorority. Another was going to San Francisco for her sorority sister's sister's wedding in Napa and a third was going on a quick road trip to visit her sorority sister in Atlanta. One is a TriDelt, one a PiPhi and one an ADPi. Can you guess which one is the TriDelt? There is a big wide world out side of suburban St. Louis. Someone needs to tell TriDelt about it.

I know you can't help where you're born and raised, but basically, if you are from St. Louis, don't act like your from St. Louis.... Does that makes sense? Because literally nobody will like you if you act like the way a lot of St. Louis people act. It is the most infuriating thing, trying to explain to an overly proud suburbia St. Louis person that they aren't that fabulous and that Chicago, Kansas City and most Texas natives actually know what it feels like to live in a privileged, low-crime location.

I wouldn't put gphi in that category. They take a lot of Chicago girls. They have a lot of stl girls too but not nearly as many as tri delt and DG. Those houses literally have their pledge classes picked out before rush even starts. I can just see work week in those houses going something like "okay guys, we have to throw in at least ten girls not from our fabulous high schools to appease nationals, but the rest can be all our friends. So, let's pick out the ten and move on to which of our friends is most worthy."
Also wouldn't put kappa in there either. I know a lot of girls from other places in that house. In fact I found kappa seems to have a lot more kc girls. But yes the most diverse is Pi phi, axo, theta, kd, etc.
