out of state

by:

Hi! I'm embarrassed to be on this site, but I am very curious about something. Does being from out of state impact a girls recruitment in any way? Positive or negative? I am from a pretty cool city and have some wonderful things going for me, but I am just wondering if not being from STL or KC will hurt my chances. Just curious, thanks (-:

Positive impact. It gives you something to talk about (be sure you know how it compares to K.C. and St. Louis, for example) and there aren't any petty girls already in the house who can be critical of something you did in high school -- cuz no one knows you.

It's more less based on your personality. When you're from STL or KC you can have girls you went to high school with or just around the area who could vouch for you OR ruin your chances. When you're out of state you usually have a clean slate, assuming your social media doesn't lead to otherwise. Keep in mind there are places out of state where going to Mizzou is a popular choice like Chicago, Minneapolis, and Dallas so your past could still follow you.

I call BS on this. I am from out of state and while my grades and activities were good enough to keep me in the running, I really think being out of state helped because I alone was responsible for what people thought of me. I sailed through rush and got all of my top choices. On the last two days of rush I could have seen myself in any of the houses I went to, which included all of the top houses and top middle. I wound up getting "dirty rushed" from three of them (virtually promising me a bid on the last day) and I wound up with my first choice. Having seen the other side of rush (I will be a junior) I think it's clear that I was able to speak for myself and at cut sessions there was no one speaking against me because they knew me from high school. You would not believe some of the petty things you hear from people who have gone to high school with someone ("I swear there were days she didn't wash her hair" or "Her sister made sure my sister didn't get on the cheerleading squad"). When you are from out of state and know no one when you go through recruitment, you have no baggage, and that's how it should be. Good luck to you.

In my experience, if your from out of state and not a legacy good luck!. On my floor last year there were 3 out of staters in my wing , none legacies and none got in! It's different if your a legacy. You may get in a so called "bottom tier" - maybe if your not a legacy. And it's true unfortunately the St. Louis girls are sooo stuck in high school. Therefore it's also true you have no baggage because nobody knows you. But good luck finding girls during rush with open minds to a new state!!

I disagree. I am in a house that prides itself on its diversity and geography is part of the diversity. We give out-of-state girls the same, if not more, opportunities than in state. We are looking for someone who will make our house more interesting and often out-of-state girls do just that.

I'm from out of state and joining a sorority was the best thing that could've ever happened to me. I made so many new, amazing friends and am so lucky to be able to call them my sisters. It's all about who you are and what house you fit into best. You'll find your match and I guarantee you'll be so thankful you went through recruitment.
