pnm recruitment q&a and advice

by:

I figured we could have one singular thread where girls could come and ask questions about recruitment and get some good, honest answers. I know we had a thread like this for COB and it helped a lot of girls out so if you're a PNM and you have questions, post them here to get some answers.

What makes a pnm stand out to a house? and is it really just luck by who you get paired to talk to, because there's so many girls in a house I'm sure not every active will like the same pnms? is it one mediocre conversation and you're done? That just really worries me! Any advice helps, thanks!

Sororities do quite a bit of background work. They categorize PNMs according to grades, activities, leadership, rigor of course work, competitiveness of their high school, etc. They also spend untold numbers of hours perusing Facebook and other social media to get a more complete picture of PNMs. Then many houses use a point system to rank girls before they even step foot in the house. Then the parties start and you have the opportunity to have a discussion, hopefully that is more than superficial. That's why it is important to do what you can to help make the conversation flow. Remember, the people you are talking to may be nervous, too, if this is their first rush from the "other side." So come prepared with questions and think about how you can keep the conversation going. As rush progresses and you get asked back, you might very well see some of the same members who have been "assigned" to you so that the conversation is even easier. Believe me, the process is more comprehensive than you might think and the only way that you would be done after just one conversation is because something else has helped determine you aren't a good fit for that house.

Here's my question: with everyone wearing the same T-shirts we all will sort of look like clones. I would like to stand apart from the crowd but not be weird or flashy. Any tips?

Just don't do anything too weird or you will forever be known at cut sessions as an odd girl. In an effort to be different one year a girl put her curly hair up in a really disheveled way that made it look as if she hadn't combed it (or washed it) for a week. Then she wore a red bandanna that really didn't match her outfit at all. We asked her back once because she looked really good on paper. But we referred to her as Rosie the Riveter. I have to clarify that it wasn't just her appearance. the conversation was a problem, too. We just couldn't find a way to relate to her. It's as if she was going out of her way to be bizarre.

What is the deal with rec letters? When should they be submitted?

By: Anna

Start submitting once you've registered.

is it just me or is mizzou's registration super late compared to other schools? I feel like all my friends signed up in early June!

Probably but we have so many greeks that the late start doesn't matter. Trust me, you'll be moving into your dorm early and preparing for rush before you know it!

by: late sign up

I believe the reason for late sign up is to give the PNMs and their parents an opportunity at Summer orientation to find out information/ facts about Mizzou Greek Life. By July sign up time most know if they want to rush and therefore 99% of the girls that register for recruitment do go through.

I'm coming from out of state. Which sororities will cut me because I'm not from MO?

By: Ohio girl

I actually think you will have an advantage coming from out of state. There are some houses that pride themselves on being diverse, and that includes geographical diversity. Besides, then you don't have a bunch of catty girls you knew from high school telling everyone about the time you inadvertently lost your shorts in the Powder Puff game or stole their boyfriend. Don't worry. If your grades and everything else are high enough, being from out of state won't hurt you.

How many rec letters do I need? I have two for most houses, but more for some because I know more alumni. How many is too many?

Two max per house, pick the ones that make you look the best.

If I am the younger sister of an active member (at Mizzou obviously) will I get cut?

By: Lil sis

I'm not greek myself yet at Mizzou, but I have alot of friends who are. And if I've been informed correctly, that'll actually help you! So woot (:

you MUST receive a bid if your older sister is an active already. That doesn't mean you must accept, but for most houses I know active girls with sisters must receive one unless they can give a national reason why they shouldn't receive one.

That's not true in my house. We will make every effort to get to know her and to consider her for a bid, but she still must meet our basic requirements. If she doesn't we will cut her before the last party day and if she is invited to the last day she will appear in the top half of our bid list. But if all of the names ahead of her accept our bids, she might not get in. I don't want to discourage anyone, but no one should go through rush coasting or assuming anything. Hearts can be broken.
